Windows Update error code 8024402c, could not search for.

    I'm fixing a HP Pavilion dv2530, Vista 32bit. When i went to windows update, there was no option for SP1 or SP2, but there were others. i installed them no problem. I manually downloaded SP1 and SP2 and installed them both successfully. Now "windows could not search for new updates" error code 8024402c.
    This is what I have tried so far.

    there are no problems with LAN proxy settings, I use a mobile dongle.
    pinged downloadwindowsupdate.com - successful
    ran chkdsk - no problem
    sfc/ scannow - no problem
    turned off antivirus and firewall
    allowed the windows updates sites through the popup blocker
    ran Advanced System Care registry cleaner and CCleaner
    Installed Windows update readiness tool
    ran Microsoft Fixit. - "the location where Windows updates stores data has been changed and must be repaired" It says that this was successful, but if i run it again it will say the same issue and that it was repaired successfully. Still can't search for updates though.

    Any other suggestions?
