We have a small office network with 2 new Dell PCs, both with Vista Business pre-installed, one Latitude D630 notebook, one Optiplex 745 desktop, both with 2 GB RAM. They are connected together with a new Linksys WAG200G router. We use the Public directory on the desktop as the main folder for both PCs and use file sharing so that the notebook can access the folder, both online and offline.

The problem we have is that file sharing will disconnect frequently, the notebook will show file sharing is offline even wehn the PCs remain connected. We can ping each other's PC and connect to the Internet, but there is no file shairng connection and, therefore, the notebook can't sync to the Public directory on the desktop. The only way to regain the connection is to restart both machines, as well as the router.

The disconnection almost always is triggered after the desktop user has modified a file in the Public directory and then the notebook cuser tries to access the folder in which the modified file is located. Accessing the folder will take significant time, 20 - 30 seconds, and it will disconnect. This happens at least 50% of the time. Very frustrating. The problem occurs whether the notebook is connected wired or wireless.

I have tired a number of fixes, but none successful. These include setting Autotuning to Off and then Limited, turning off IPv6, and setting static IP addresses on both machines.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried creating a dummy folder on the Vista desktop, right clicked it and made it shareable? Try doing that and using that instead of the predefined public share folder.

Thanks very much for your suggestion. I tried this, but we have exactly the same problem.

In addition to the file share disconnection, we also often have problems opening larger files (usually Excel - we use Excel 2007) on the notebook from the shared folder on the desktop. Excel just hangs.

I assume this setup used to work when you have just XP machines, or is this a new setup you are doing with the Vista machines that's never been done/worked before?
