slow to access internet sites

    I am new to this site and forgive me for my lack of knowledge!I have a dell laptop running vista ,IE8 and just this weekend when I click on any of my sites,msn,Auto tech sites,anything,it takes at least 1 minute to bring up the site.I use google chrome because explorer always would freeze up on me.Never had a problem until now.I have avg free virus and says all good.While accessing site there is a little scrolling circle next to top box that scrolls extremely slow counterclockwise until right before the site opens ,then it goes clockwise and site appears?Any info or direction would be appreciated.
