When I try and link to a web page via shortcut on the desktop (e.g. http://bbc.co.uk) or click on a link within an e-mail on a Vista machine, it fails with a message "Application not found". If I paste the link into IE7 then it works. This has happened since an update I believe, but cannot identify which.

Any ideas or a solution would be most appreciated.

First thing to try: Type 'Default Programs' in start menu and press enter. And go into 'associate file type with specific application or protocol'. When the list eventually loads make sure that http: etc open with IE.

If that doesn't work, you could try a system restore (type 'system restore' into start menu). Follow instructions on screen and select a date before the problem occured.
