Windows Vista uses a new Boot configuration Database (BCD) store which contains a boot menu and all the information about the OS's installed on the computer. You need to remove this Vista Boot Manager and restore the boot.ini file.

    1. Boot into WinRE using the Windows Vista Media and open a Command Prompt.

    2. Restore the boot sector for the legacy OS. Assuming that D: is the ROM drive and C: is the system partition (the partition containing the BCD and BootMGR files), type the following at the

command line, pressing ENTER after you type the line:

    D:\boot\bootsect /nt52 c:

    3. Close the Command Prompt and Click Restart

    4. Boot into the previous OS

What if this is a standalone install, and you formatted the drive as an external drive, put it back into the laptop as the primary drive, and then tried to use your XP install disk, and your cdrom will no longer boot from itself? Somehow, when i removed Vista, it still has a footprint on my laptop that i can not remove, and i can't install over it even though it isnt there anymore. It spins my XP disk for about 30 seconds and then hangs on a blinking cursor. I've even put in an XP hard disk that works on another machine and it won't boot from it, but it does on non vista machines. Help!

Look around for a format CD for a harddrive you may have bought. If you can't find one ask around and see if anybody you know has one. If all else fails find some software you can boot from a floppy disk.

If you have an XP CD, and can boot with it, try the following:

Boot to the CD, and when it loads the setup program, hit "R" for recovery. Once into the recovery system, type:

    fixmbr

    fixboot

Then reboot. That should take care of your problem.

If not, I still don't think you need to reformat, we will find a way! :)

    hi all!

i bought a fujitsu siemens laptop and theres a hidden WinRE on my harddisk.

usually you can boot the WinRE from the boot menu when pressing F8, but

i already re-installed vista from scratch and now the boot entry seems to be gone.

is there a way to access this entry even if it has been deleted?
