    hi,

i have re-installed vista ultimate on my older dell xps by pressing the F8 key and so-forth.

regrettably dvd playback is missing now.

please advise on how to restore dvd playback.

    thank you.

I'm thinking this is a codec issue.

Download one of the following codec packs for media playback.
    1. Many people download VLC Media Player, which includes most of the codecs needed for playback.
    2. K-Lite Codec Pack (This one I personally use)

    hi,

i have installed VLC and the Windows Essential Codec Pack.

first i installed WECP then the VLC. both times the dvd got spit back out of the slot after some time.

    vlc poped up this error...
    Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd://E:\'. Check the log for details.

thank you again for your help.

edit: i tryed 2 different dvds.

Is it possible you have a faulty DVD drive. I've done a small search for that VLC code but the only thing I can come up with is possibly a bad DVD drive.

Was you having this issue before the restore?

    thank you clifford.

it may be a bad dvd drive.

the machine has not been abused but it may just be faulty. :(

it makes some ugly noises when you put the dvd into it.

Those ugly noises are the mechanics going crazy trying to find where the head needs to be located. Sounds as if your drive is having trouble reading the DVD's.

Have you considered using a CD/DVD Laser Lens Cleaner on the drive?

that may be all it needs.

i live in las vegas, nv and its very dusty here.

i am surprised that the machine's fan still works but i think i heard it kick on this afternoon.

I'm happy to hear that helped you.

It doesn't always help but never hurts to try. :)
