    Personal observation, and experience (unfortunately) is that there are windows driver updates, especially to HDD drivers, that run the risk of corrupting your Vista file system.



    Advice is to do the following:

    1) Reinstall Vista (may have to contact Dell to do this)

    2) Turn OFF automatic updates, set to to notify only

    3) When Windows Update prompts, look at the details on each update. If the update is for security issues, it's OK. If the update is for device driver, only install those for devices like printers, USB ports. If you're not sure what the device driver is for, don't install it.

    4) If your Device manager shows any devices as not installed properly, you will need to allow the installation of those drivers.
