    Hi,

I have Windows Vista. My computer is set for automatic updates but that does not seem to be happening. I have tried to manually check for updates and it just runs and runs and runs but never fetches updates. (I let the Checking for Updates run all afternoon yesterday before finally powering down.)

I have run Super Anti Spyware, Malwarebytes, and AVG. Nothing found.

I am not a real techie person (alas!) and this is all I know to do. Can anyone give advice in really easy to understand terms? Thanks so much! I am so glad to find this board.

Although Windows Updates have been almost completely broken for the last year or so, especially on new installs, you can try to download the updates yourself.

Since I'm a newbie here apparently, I can't post the link yet. However, you can try to search for the relevant KB articles that you need. I know that there are fixes around it, but I haven't tried nor can certify that they will work on every installation of Vista.

    southernbelle7,

The Windows Update service seems to be working again for Vista downloads, it worked for me, just leave it on auto check.

    Good luck,

    clive.

@clive: Yeah, it still breaks when you have a clean install, however.
I have the files to fix the issue of it taking forever to update after a clean install, though.

The services are working fine now for the most part, just slower.

I can't post links either but you will find the KB numbers for relevant downloads listed in the monthly Microsoft Security Bulletins. Search on "Microsoft Security Bulletin" and you can easily find all the monthly bulletins since the last update in your history. You can then use the Windows Update Catalog to locate and download the updates to your desktop. Run the update by double-clicking. You must use IE9 to access the WUC.

I came here because I too have a fresh clean installation of Vista and after I installed SP2 and the 81 following updates I too experienced the forever running check for updates. I was hoping to avoid manual updating but I see that I have to do it that way.
