Hello. I'm unable to install Microsoft Security Essentials or Comodo Firewall Free. The system I'm working on has Trend Micro Antivirus installed yet I can't turn it on from Security Center. I tried installing Online Armour and I couldn't do that either. I started getting access violations. I checked to see if the Windows Installer service had been started. It had not so I started it and tried the various installs again to no avail. The system is a HP Presario C500 with an Intel Celeron M CPU 440 @ 1.86 GHz. 512 MB memory Vista home basic SP2. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Inability to install AV products is a typical side-effect of rootkits.

Go to the link below and download the TDSSKiller utility and run it.

If you do have a rootkit, this will find it and remove it:

Thanks for the tip, however, I tried TDSSKiller and it did not find anything. Are there any other rootkit removers that you are aware of?

    Sorry, no.

However, you could also download and run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (known as MBAM) and SuperAntiSpyWare. Both are free and both do a good job of detecting and removing malware.
