    Well, here's my situation.

I cannot boot to Vista. Fatal application error, will not even boot up in safe mode. Thus, I fear a reinstallation is needed. The auto-repair tool does not find anything wrong.

Here's my question. I want to reinstall Vista without losing all of my files. I want to simply overwrite the current installation rather than format and lose everything. Is there a way to do this without difficulty? Is therea way to create a brand new partition on empty space and install from there so I can retrieve the files, backup, and reinstall fresh? Anything like that?

    Any help is appreciated.

Just go ahead and isntall it. It will move everything to a windows.old folder where you can simply move all your old documents and files over to your new windows.
