Problem using camera USB cable

With old computer, running Windows XP, if I wanted to transfer pictures from
my camera to my computer I could just plug the USB cord into the camera &
into the computer and the picture wizzard would automatically come up and
walk me right through it.
With my new computer, running Windows Vista, when I plug the USB cable in, I
get the sound that I usually get when I plug the cable in but nothing more
happens. I don't know how to get to the wizzard so I can download (or upload
or whatever the correct term is) my pics to my computer. I do have the
capability to take out my XD picture card and insert it into my computer but
I also want to be able to use the USB cable. Is this a Vista thing? Either
way, can you please help me.
Thank you.

UPDATE: I put the picture card in the computer to get the pictures to my
computer and now that isn't working either. The only thing I can think of it
has something to do with the software I installed to use a new MP3 player we
bought from Best Buy. Is there anyway to fix this so I can use the MP3
player and upload my pictures?

My Olympus camera isn't automatically detected as a camera, but it works.
I connect it to the USB cable, select PC connection on the camera.
Open Windows Live Photo Gallery
File - Import from camera or scanner
it doesn't show up under cameras, it shows up as Removable Disk (M under
Other Devices.
highlight M:, click on Import
and it works just fine....

Dave,

I could try what you suggested. In the meantime, I uninstalled all the
software that came with my MP3 player. That was the problem because now the
camera is working just fine. I can still get the computer to download music
to the MP3 player but not pictures. For that I would need the software. Do
you think a different MP3 player would be more compatible with my system? I
know absolutely nothing about MP3 players. Or should I reinstall the
software and try to upload pictures as you suggested? Or I could install the
software just on the few occasions I would want to download photos or videos
to the MP3 player and uninstall it to make importing pictures from my camera
to the computer easier. Or is that hard on the computer? BTW, my camera is
also an Olympus. Please give me any additional suggestions you have. As you
can tell, I'm in over my head.
Thank you.
