Okay so on my alienware m15x-R1 has a NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GT graphics card and i havent updated the driver since i bought it in july of 2009 so i decided to update my driver using the "device manager" in windows vista x64 bit (my OS) and it updated it from the original version which was from augest of 2008 to a new one, version 179.67, and i know that the newest version is 197.16 WHQL so i went to the Nvidia website ( and downloaded the new driver but as soon as i restarted my computer the screen resolution kept switching between 800x600 and 1440x900 (lowest and highest) and was switching so fast that it became impossible to do anything because it was switching about once a second so i did a system restore (when i opened up task manager the problem stopped and just stayed at 800x600) and now im back to my old driver. is my driver just not compatible or did i not do something that was needed before i installed it? any help would be very appreciated.

Don't know about NVidia, but with ATI, you need to remove the old drivers first and then install the new drivers. Sounds like what you did was just update the drivers in-place with newer onesw.
