Hello there,

I spent whole day trying to find solution to this issue.

It's Windows Vista Business x64 with Windows Media Player 11
v11.0.6000.6344.

Both x86 and x64 versions of WMP11 don't want to play any WMV that's
got Windows Media Video V7, Windows Media Video V8 or Windows Media
Video 9 Advanced Profile video codecs.
It gives sound but no picture - black surface. Doesn't report any
error. Other videos with other codecs are played quiet fine.

For example, the video I cannot play is this one:

Windows Vista Business x64 is up-to-date with all updates as WMP11 is.
I tried installing Vista Codecs Pack v4.5.6 and x64 Components v1.3.5
but without luck.

The same box wants to play those videos with Winamp v5.5.

Strange thing is that for Windows Media Video 9 Advanced Profile video
it doesn't show picture until I select View / Enhancements / Show
Enhancement. Then as soon as I close Color Chooser the picture
disappears. This behaviour doesn't happen for other codecs listed
above.

I tried running "c:\windows\system32\unregmp2.exe /UpdateWMP" but it
didn't help too.

During first time installation of WMP11, I got an error which is
tracked down in installation log as:

"ERROR: Caller attempted to run 32bit unregmp2 on 64bit Windows. Call
being switched to correct unregmp2."

Here's Support Information of x86 WMP11 version on my system:

You've installed a lot of codecs I wouldn't think you would need (you
certainly didn't need one here - there was already the codec present on the
system), but this sounds like the video card driver is having issues. Is
there an update available from the video card vendor?

WinAMP displays video slightly differently. Every player does.

You didn't need the Vista Codec Pack - WMP would have known about a missing
codec if this was a codec failure. It appears to be a bad video card
driver, which is in line with other comments people have been making here
about that. =\
