movie maker

I have imported my mpg files from my Sony DV handycam (DCR SR42) into movei
maker but i only get audio and no video whatsoever when trying to edit them.
I have visa home basic and another pc with XP but i get the same result on
both pc's. Media player has all the latest updates etc. Is it something to do
with the mpg format from the camera? Anyone know?

Home basic does not come witha dvd decoder, so converting the files to wmv
using windows media encoder or similar will be required.
No XP comes with the decoder.
