I am working on a machine for a friend.

Her Internet Explorer version 8 is stuck at Version: 8.0.6001.18813...

[ I found a post from 2009 that has the identical signature ]

The problem is that Windows Update finds updates and then decides that
a newer version [ of IE 8 ] is already installed....

That is utter nonsense.

There is no way to go back to do a Restore of the system to before this problem reared its ugly head. [ Too far back ].

What OTHER solution is there? For instance could I "force install IE 9 RC" ???
A regular attempt to put on IE9RC failed...

As an aside the error code that shows up is "Code E"

It also happens on a .NET 1.1 SP update.

Two other updates install OK, but are again flagged as necessary on the next Windows Update attempt....

All of this seems a catch 22 situation.

Thanx in advance for any help,
