Hybrid sleep option missing

Hi

When i go to power options and select what to do when i press the sleep
button, the "Hybrid sleep" is missing. I have enabled "Allow hybrid sleep"
in the advanced power settings and if i type 'powercfg -a' in command prompt
i am told the following sleep states are available.

Standby (S3) Hibernate Hybrid Sleep

Yet when i go to power options i get -
Do nothing
Sleep
Hibernate

I have read of loads of people who can't Hibernate because of Hybrid Sleep,
i appear to have the opposite. How do i enable my computer to use Hybrid
Sleep please.

The hybrid sleep feature and the hibernation feature in Windows Vista may
become unavailable after you use the Disk Cleanup Tool :

Hi

Please before anyone replies to this CAN YOU READ what the problem is,
people seem to be confusing hibernate and hybrid sleep options.

I CAN HIBERNATE, however, no matter what i do, i DO NOT get the option for
HYBRID SLEEP.

'powercfg -h on' appears to enable hybernation, i can already hibernate,
that is not a problem.

I have enabled "allow hybrid sleep" in advanced power options, however, i
still do not get that option when i press the sleep button. I can sleep, i
can hibernate, i CANNOT enable or use HYBRID SLEEP.

Are you familiar with exactly what Hybrid Sleep is? If you put the computer
into sleep mode and the power dies the computer (if hybrid sleep is enabled
in Vista's settings) the computer will have copied the system state into the
hibernate disk file. There is no hybrid sleep button.

From the help section of Vista:

"Hybrid sleep is another new power-saving feature designed primarily for
desktop computers. Hybrid sleep saves any open documents and programs to
memory and to your hard disk, and then puts your computer into a low-power
state.

Unlike mobile PCs, desktop computers typically don't have battery-based
power backup. So if a sudden power failure occurs to a desktop computer in
standard sleep mode, data loss could occur.

But with hybrid sleep turned on, Windows can restore your work from your
hard disk. On desktop computers, hybrid sleep is typically turned on by
default.

When hybrid sleep is turned on, clicking Sleep automatically puts your
computer into hybrid sleep. When hybrid sleep is turned off, or if your
computer doesn't support hybrid sleep, clicking Sleep puts the computer to
sleep.

To turn hybrid sleep on or off:

Open Power Options
On the Select a power plan page, click Change plan settings under the
selected plan.
On the Change settings for the plan page, click Change advanced power
settings.
On the Advanced settings tab, expand Sleep, expand Allow hybrid sleep, and
then do one of the following:
If you are using a mobile PC, click On battery or Plugged in (or both),
click the arrow, and then click On.
If you are using a desktop computer, click Setting, click the arrow, and
then click On.
Click OK, and then click Save changes."

So, if it is enabled in your advanced power mangagement, and your computer
supports it, you have hybrid sleep. You can test it by putting the system
to sleep with a program such as notepad open and unplugging the computer.
Wait about 10 seconds and plug the computer back in and press the power
button. You should come back to the original screen with notepad open if
the hybrid sleep is working.

Just to recap, i have enabled "Allow hybrid sleep" in advanced power options.

I have 3 power options for my sleep button

1. "Do Nothing" - this does nothing when i press the sleep button

2. "Sleep" - when i press the sleep button my computer appears to go to
sleep, if i wait a few minutes then pull out the power from the computer,
when i restart my computer it tell me that windows wasn't shut down properly
the last time, and when windows starts, everything has gone, it is a normal
startup.

3. "Hibernate" - when i press the sleep button my computer hibernates, it
saves my current state to the hard drive then turns off, when i turn the
computer back on it says "resuming windows", and after minute or so i have my
work back as it was when i shut down.

Now, am i missing something or is HYBRID SLEEP not working for me on my
computer.

Hybrid sleep NEVER shows as an option. It is a system that automatically
hibernates the computer when you put it to sleep. It is automatic. The
only way to know if it is working is to do what I said earlier. Put it to
sleep with a minor program on the desktop, unplug it after it totally goes
to sleep (wait at least 30 seconds after sleep and monitor goes off) and
then plug in and start again.

Sorry for my confusion, when researching this online first, people were
concerned about the "hibernation" option being missing, so i firstly assumed
that if hybrid sleep was working then i wouldn't get the "hibernation" option
but maybe would get a "hybrid sleep" option instead.

Anyway, in my last post i did say that i did "sleep" then cut the power and
it didn't work, i lost everything, i got a "your computer wasn't shut down
properly error".

Is this normal with hybrdi sleep or am i correct in assuming hybrid sleep is
not working.

If you allowed the system time to copy the "desktop" to the hibernate file
upon sleep, apparently the hybrid sleep function isn't working. (Missed
where you said you tried it.)
On my Vista Laptop, I have Hibernate and Sleep both available. When I check
further the system is capable of Hybrid Sleep (that is where I got the
information below!

Check using the method that Mark gave.

Click Start, Run, type CMD in window and press enter.

In the command window that opens type "powercfg -a" (without the quotes) and
press enter.

You should see:
"The following sleep states ............system: Standby (S3) Hibernate
Hybrid Sleep"
The following sleep states are not available on this system
Standby (S1)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.
Standby (S2)
The system firmware does not support this standby state."

So, if it doesn't state that it supports S3 the Hybrid Sleep function won't
work.

Next, what make and model of computer are you using?

Right in my very first post i mention doing powercfg -a, and the resulting
sleep states reported back, i just didn't bother elaborating on everything it
reported, it does however say that hybrid sleep is available.

I am now thinking its "sleep" that is at fault, when i hit the sleep button
and the option is "sleep", both my monitors go blank but the fan in the back
of the computer is still spinning, and the power light stays on some half an
hour later, this doesn't sound like the low power state people are talking
about, it apperas to merely turn off the monitors.

powercfg -a reports
"Standby (S3) Hibernate Hybrid Sleep" as my available modes, what is (S3),
is this not a proper standby for some reason
