Hello,

Just recently over the past few days I have noticed that Windows Explorer has been going a bit screwy. Whenever I tried to delete a file, the "deleting" dialog box would appear, the file would move itself to the recycle bin, yet the dialog box would just sit there calculating the remaining time. I was able to do other things, but these boxes would not go away. For some reason, whenever I attempt to rename a file or folder, Windows Explorer will just freeze up. The only was to get rid of these dialog boxes or "unfreeze" Windows would be to restart explorer.exe using the task manager.

At first I had assumed that the problem was just some stupid error and would resolve itself after a good ol' reboot; ... I was wrong. I am almost positive that I hadn't installed anything or added new devices (definitely) in the past few days (maybe XviD, but would that cause this and it may have been installed after the problems). I am unable to do a system restore due to the face that there weren't any restore points . I have tried the administrator account but the problem still exists there. In safe mode, it works perfectly; disabling all the startup programs does not.

A bit about my computer:
I have some stats in my signature. I bought my computer a couple years ago from Dell with Windows XP Professional installed. Since then I have installed Windows Vista Ultimate (fresh install) and it has worked well for at least three months.

Thank you.

There were some very recent Vista windows updates (Jan 9th?), some of which had to do with real-time performace. I think the time calculation problem may have been among them. Check to see if you've applied these updates.

Otherwise, there's not really anything you can do. I use Vista every day on my laptop and several times a day, I have Windows Explorer stop or screw up my desktop. I've been unable to find a fix for it.

I've running WindowBlinds and have been told that it's the problem, but I've run without it and that doesn't fix it. I just do a logoff/logon when the problem happens. That's quicker than rebooting.

Yeah, for now I just created a .bat file to restart windows explorer. It works quite well and is pretty quick.

taskkill /im explorer.exe /f
%systemroot%\explorer.exe
exit

Go to http://www.liutilities.com/affcb/?id=RBgen&aff=3029&xat=gen and get a scan to determine what to fix.
