Data Transfer

I got as far as connecting the transfer cable on both computers. The action
lights flickered on both for about 15min and then they stopped. I waited for
another half an hour but nothing further was happening, so I eliminated the
transfer Windows. I found that no data has been transferred although both
have Win.Vista Business. Where did I go wrong? The cable I used was supplied
by Laplink.
Can someone with the experience of data transfer please put me on the right
path?

Well, let's start by getting details. What software were you using to
attempt to transfer data and how exactly did you begin the process?

I found the Windows Easy Transfer in All Programs. I started the process on
the new computer as per instructions. I did the same on the old computer and
got to the stage of instructions :- "If you have Windows Vista connect the
cable" which I did. The transfer software ( and the Synchronization
software) are supposed to be included in windows Vista, so there is no need
for any other software!

If I cannot get an answer to this problem through the Communities who do you
suggest I should ask?

Hi there

Are using a crossover cable to connect both the pcs or are you trying to do
it with a normal cat5 cable?

Okay, that begins to get the info we need. What kind of cable was this - is
it a USB to USB cable or is it some other, older sort of LapLink cable?

I used Laplink cable, which is also used with their PCmover software.

Frankly I don't know if that is a supported cable or not. Given your
experience I would suspect not. There are specific EasyTransfer cables out
there, or you can use a network connection, or removable media (CD/flash
memory/etc) to make the transfer. Unless the cable states that it is
EasyTransfer compatible I would assume that it is not.

The cable was confirmed by Laplink as suitable for Windows Easy Transfer
before I used it. (I think the Firewalls were the problem). However today I
tried to do the transfer via network and I was partially successful, but
after about three quarters of data was transferred the process got stuck
again on a certain file. Although I cancelled the transfer process after
about half an hour I found that a lot of my Folders and Files were
transferred and are usable on my second computer, but about a third of my
Folders, the Favorites and Windows Mail were not transfer!
How do I proceed now - do I start from the beginning again?

I would start from the beginning, perhaps using a different transfer method.
If it still hangs at about the same point you need to decide how you can
clean up the files being transferred so as to avoid the hang.
