A hard drive regenerator utility will recover bad sectors and determine the integrity of your drive, the manufacturer's utility will test the drive, but this is usually not a hard drive integrity issue it is a software issue. Microsoft has been issuing hotfixes for this problem since Windows 2000 and every year since. On Vista it will happen after SP1 is installed and before SP2. File 9 is corrupt and all the security id's are considered invalid, on mine it was over 300,000 files. All my data is still on my drive. Here is what I went through: Yesterday I did a fresh install of Vista, updated, moved documents from windows.old, installed drivers, check the webcam function on my Dell 1545, shut it off and when I turned it on this morning it did the reboot cycle. Booted into the Vista dvd to do a repair, it showed no OS. Pulled the drive and slaved it to another pc to use HDD Regenerator to repair and check it but on boot the chkdsk startedand after 500,000 some files, indexes, security id'swere found corrupt you have no choice but to let chkdsk finish running. When I got into the main computers desktop I checked the drive and found all my documents. When making it the main drive again others have had to reset all the permissions on all their files. The drive is not bad, HDD did not find any bad sectors on it.

Sothe last thing I did before the error was update the driver to my webcam which is Creative Labs R2RC1. The webcams have had an issue with not working unless you plug in a usb mouse and then unplug it. The webcam worked and I shut the pc down. I don't know where I was at with MS updates, I wasn't paying attention to which ones came in. Right now I am scanning it (as a slave) with Malwarebytes. How does file 9 become corrupt? MS Updates? I don't think SP2 was installed yet. On a 1 day new install of Vista there aren't alot of things to look over.
