Computer users are well aware of the fact that an antivirus is the first and the foremost necessity to keep their PC safe from any kind of virus threats, spyware and malware.

ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4

• Excellent detection and removal of malware

• Performance overhauls are the hallmark of Norton Internet Security 2009

• Pulse updates’ to deliver more frequent & smaller signature updates

McAfee VirusScan Plus

• Ideal for those seeking an antivirus/firewall combination without all the bloat of tra ditional Internet security suites

• Removes adware and spyware, which not all antivirus products can do

• SiteAdvisor service helps to guard against malicious websites

Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal

• Offers excellent antivirus protection

• Unpacks and scans compressed files

• Should be used in conjunction with a firewal

BitDefender Antivirus Plus

• Protects against viruses, spyware, and instant messaging threats

• Offers firewall rules to block undesirable traffic and a privacy gateway to keep your identity and preferences private while surfing the Internet

AVG Anti-Malware

No matter whether you are a home or business computer user, download the free or demo version of any antivirus product mentioned in the list. If you feel satisfied with the performance of your computer, you can buy a licensed copy of it.

I put my money on Microsoft Security essentials. Very effective (captured and deleted a couple of Trojans the other day), runs in real time without being intrusive and does a daily scan. You never know it's there. Very small footprint.

Not if you have Windows 7.

I'm not sure how AVG is for Vista but AVG is awful for Windows 7.

My vote (surprisingly) is for Norton AV 2011.

I say surprisingly, because I quit using Norton AV in 2005 when it became bloatware big-time. Switched over to ESET NOD32.

But then with NOD32 2009, I noticed serious runtime performance problems in my tablet PC. I tried Norton 2010 -- and was really impressed. Not only did its scan find things that NOD 32 had not, it also had no detrimental effect on the runtime performance.

I've upgraded to Norton AV 2011 and have replaced NOD 32 on all my PCs.
