| | Hi I am running Windows Vista Build 5342 and I just tried to play counterstrike 1.6. When it booted up it said something about the program not being compatible with my video stuff and that it needed to run in software mode. I have a ATI Radeon 9800 pro which has worked fine with the game for ages. I am guessing that it is because of the new DirectX 10's lack of legacy support. I also read that it is possible to run Directx9 and below programs by installing DirectX 9 alongside DX10. I was wondering how I do this and/or what else I should do to get cs working! thanks -Taylor |

| | All OpenGl games will NOT work in vista, until Nvidia and ATI release drivers which allow it to run. Gamespot have a page with some of the most popular games tested on vista beta 2: http://www.gamespot.com/features/6154735/index.html Quite a decent compatibility list although some problems they experienced an be got around.

Asus-SLI Deluxe, AMD x2 4400 (oc'd to 5000), x1900xtx (oc'd), 2GB Corsair XMS RAM 2-3-3-6 (4x512), 500GB Maxtor HDD w/ 32mb cache, 300GB Maxtor HDD w/ 16mb cache, Creative Audigy 4 (Daniel Driver Set), HVR-1100 Dvb-t hybrid TV card, 580W Hiper Type M PSU. 5.0 score on Vista Ultimate x64, 6040 3DMark 06' score on XP |

| If you want DX9 installed as well as DX10 i noticed for 3Dmark 06 to work you have to let it install DX9c (december 05) for it to work. It installs, 3Dmark works and DX10 is still there.

| I know this is an old post but still...
One of the main reasons i hesitated on Vista was because I belong to a CSSource clan and if I couldn't get Vista to work with CSS i wasn't gonna swap.
I have a ATI Radeon 9600 128mb card that isn't great but does the job and I get about 50 -60FPS in game under XP. I tried installing Vista on my hardware and with RC2 the Radeon card used the built in drivers and worked perfectly. After a quick visit to ATI site it said there (at the time) to use the built-in drivers as they were the best.
Steam and CSS both installed fine on Vista yet I had a much lower frame rate in the game.
I found that a frame rate of much lower than 40FPS (with everything turned down) and it just isn't possible to play at a competitive level so I had to revert back to XP for my gaming machine.
Anyone know a way of getting the performance back out of my card under Vista?
-----------

| I have a radeon x1900xtx and I know the problem that your having. Although the performance hit I take is only 2-5fps it is still hit non the less. The problem is that the drivers for vista aren't as good as XP's and hence the drop in performance. This isn't going to be remedied until vista has been out a few months. After having a look at XP - Vista scores for my system on 3DMark 06 I could see that shader model 2.0 score took the biggest hit losing a few hundred points, where as shader model 3.0 was only slightly less. My guess is that ATI are focussing on driver support for the latest games/cards and old games are propbably never going to run as good as they did in XP.Conclusion, dual boot and use XP for gaming like I do.
