| | | | After two days and reading many, many threads, I finally got to the place
where I can see both my XP desktop and my vista laptop on the network full
map display. There are dotted lines from both computers to the router.
However, the XP desktop doesn't show up when I choose computers and devices
or under network. Any ideas?

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.
How to give Permissions are there, too.
If you are running Norton, etc???s Firewall, check its settings.
1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.
In Vista Network and Sharing:
Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)
Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)
File Sharing: ON
Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista???s Public Folder is the same as XP???s Shared
Docs)
Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be
asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer
from an XP computer.
Also, run the XP???s Home Network File and Printer sharing Wizard.

The following information is intended both as supplementary background
to the question previously posted and as an appeal for help.
Vista Home Premium desktop (wired connection)
Vista Home Premium laptop (wireless connection)
Linksys WAG54GS wireless/wired router/switch
I used to run an XP laptop successfully with the Vista desktop and
Linksys router, sharing files both ways, sharing printer, internet.
Now, having substituted a Vista laptop, the Vista desktop cannot access
files on the Vista laptop - most of the time! Ocasionally it can. The
laptop can access files on the desktop. Printer and internet are fine.
The desktop shows the laptop on the network map. It does NOT show the
laptop if I list devices.
The desktop network map shows the laptop connected by a dotted line,
but the laptop network map shows it connected by a solid line.
Using Windows Explorer the desktop quite often (but not always) shows
the laptop but usually (but not always) gives an error if I try to
expand the folder tree below it in the folder pane or show it's contents
in the file pane.
I am confident the share permissions and the NTFS security permissions
are OK. I've run this stuff before, read the Microsoft guide below, and
set both the types of permissions worryingly open. The workgroup name is
the same.
The behaviour described above is unaffected by:
- turning off the laptop firewall
- using a wired connection instead of wireless
- rebooting either or both
- swearing at it
Any ideas?

ROUTER/SWITCH
My networking problem, described below, was down to the router/switch.
That may or may not be the case for others but should certainly be
considered.
I have a Linksys ADSL Gateway WAG54GS. It was running firmware version
1.01.01. Upgrading the firmware to 1.01.03 solved the problem.
While the firmware upgrade is available for download from
linksysbycisco, the process of installing it and making it active is
very far from simple, so I would advise contacting linksys support.
