Hibernation is turned on. Checked all devices to ensure none have the
"wake on" feature activated.
When I select hibernate, the screen goes black for a few seconds then
the logon menu is presented. Hibernation never occurs.

It sounds like 'Lock' has been selected rather than hibernate. Does it say
anything to that effect under your username on the logon menu ?

Thanks for reply. Yes, 'locked' appears. Apparently 'lock' has been
executed rather than hibernate. I get the same results regardless of
how I attempt to execute hibernate (CPU power key, start menu power
key, selecting hibernate shutdown option.)
Now what .....

Very curious.
You could try switching to a different power scheme (via Control Panel >
Power Options) and / or reapplying the 'advanced power settings' for your
current scheme (especially the 'Power buttons and lid' subsection).
