Is it possible to view the mode(a or b/g) and channel of my active WLAN
connection on Vista w/o installing any 3rd party software? My corporate WLAN
contains multiple APs that share the same SSID but operate in various mode
and channels and I want to know something about what I'm currently using.

Well, Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center
gives a window with a list of networks, and in each entry is a link to View
status.
Click that link and click Details on the resulting panel.
I have no idea if any of those details is what you want, since I only have
one router here, so I see nothing relevant...
