Is anyone else having problems with vista (with SP1) freezing after
the latest batch of updates that came to me today?

Not after todays update but after KB971644 my computer blue screened twice.
Since then I have skipped that update and all has been good. Vista SP2

Mine did (with SP2) so I restored to a point before the updates and
hoping for the best!

Install sp2 after that.. should fix the problem.. download the updates
from microsoft then install it..

It happened again after I restored to a point before the updates :-(

But now I am thinking it might coincidently be a mouse problem and so
uninstalled mouse driver and I am using another mouse - so far so
good but will keep you posted.

OZ's will just never listen to NZ's hehe..

try to unistall sp1 or sp2 and reinstall it..
