As far as I know, there isn't a way to reinstall the required codec,
other than reinstalling Windows. Did you try reposting this to the
Windows 7 Music and sound forum, as suggested a few messages earlier?
What's the exact error message you get when trying to play MPEG files?

No, didn't have a chance yet to visit that forum.
and no, I don't get any error message. WMP indicates that it opens the media
and then stalls. Nothing happens.
I will pop in to that forum and repost my post.
