Hi Daniel:
Has your issue been solved?
I had a little trouble following the thread.
The reason that DVD may play when MPEG2 does not maybe related to underlying
architectures. WMP uses many different runtimes to playback media:
directshow, media foundations to name a couple.
I believe WMP uses DirectShow to playback DVD, and may use Media Foundation
to playback MPEG2 ts and ps streams. So that may be the issue.
Can you restate your problem for me?
Thanks

Hi everybody,
I installed Windows 7 a few days ago. Eveything seems OK except for Windows
Media Player V 12, which doesn't seem to be able to play mpeg files.
is it "normal" ? Should WMP normally play such files? Should I download some
kind of extra plug-in? If so, is there any free plug-in available?
many thks in advance for your kind help.
with best regards,
Daniel

so, it seems that WMP 12 can play DVDs (with a very good quality, actually),
but cannot play .mpg, .mpeg, .m1v, mpe files.
Thank you very much for your time and kind help.
With Best regards,

Beware of some Codec packs that contain malware, and of course WMP may
not play some items that are copyright.
If all else fails for things WMP can't handle VLC Media Player seems
very good and comes more or less with their own codecs already present.

For the time being that would be better than getting bad codecs from
somewhere.

| | | | | Hi Charlie,
Thank you so much for your message.
As you suggested I downloaded VLC, which can indeed play all these files.
However, when it comes to playing DVD, I find the difference to be huge:
Windows Media Player is much better.
This why I would have liked to "repair" WMP to see what results I get when
playing mpg/mpeg files.
Is it possible to reinstall it?
with brgds,
Daniel

Daniel.
I was hoping your problem would be fixed by now. This link may give you
some information to help. It is for vista though. '@ScottW How-To Geek

Reinstalling WMP is possible in Windows 7 (I think somewhere in Control
Panel - Programs and Features), but it's unlikely that this will fix the
problem. The MPEG codec isn't part of WMP, but of the OS itself.
Did you install any codec packs? If so, try removing these. They are no
good and problems like this can occur when installing them.

Hello Tim,
Many thks for your message.
no, I didn't install any codec packs.
Your message is interesting. Is there a way to re-install the codecs which
are part of the OS (Windows 7 in my case) ? Or, is there a way to check
whether these codecs are present on my system and, for some reason
"de-activated" ?
thanks again and brgds
