If you have a legit copy of Vista, you got ripped off. If not, the
reason you are getting the gray star is because WGA has flagged your
copy as pirated. You can buy a legit copy of Vista, wait for Widows 7 or
move up to a real operating system like Linux Ubuntu. It's free and
comes with access to thousands of free programs. Get it at

What "grey star"? Do you know what program is associated with this? Start
with the basics:
Be sure the computer is clean:

If the computer is virus/malware-free - and *only* when you are sure of this
- do clean-boot troubleshooting to find out with what program the "grey star"
is associated so you can remove it.

If you can't do the work yourself (and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea), take the machine to a professional computer repair
shop (not your local equivalent of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). If possible,
have all your data backed up before you take the machine into a shop.
