Printing problems in Vista over a print...Expand / Collapse

I have a network with 2 Win XP machines, one Vista machine, and a wired
print server with a lan cable from the print server attached to the DSL
router. Both XP machines see the print server and the printer and print
perfectly. On the vista machine, the print server software is showing
the networked printer, but when you send a print request, it just sits
there in the print que and never prints. Also, Vista never installed
the printer drivers. The printer doesn't show up in any of the printer
screens and when I try to add a printer manually, I get the message that
I do not have permission to add a printer - even though I am signed in
as administrator. During the install of the print server on the XP
machines XP immediately saw the printer and looked for and installed the
driver for the printer - not with Vista. I'm sure the error message is
a permission problem, but I can't figure out why it won't print and why
it doesn't look for the drivers when it can "see" the printer and
identifies it through the print server software. Please, any help would
be great. Thanks.

It sounds like the print server isn't compatible with Vista or you aren't
using the most recent drivers, which you would get from the print server
mftr.'s website. Otherwise contact the print server mftr.'s tech support.

Thanks for the reply. According to the manufacturer's website Airlink
101, this print server is Vista ready - as is the printer Brother 9700.
Also, I am using the most recent set of drivers. It doesn't make much
sense that Vista could "see" the printer and correctly identify it with
the right name through the print server software, but not be compatable.
Wouldn't there be problems installing the software or "seeing" the
printer if it were not compatable?

Thanks.

Not necessarily. I'm not familiar with that brand print server. When you say
you've got the most recent set of drivers, does that include the drivers for
the printer also? You would want to install the print server drivers on the
Vista machine and then the Vista printer drivers on the Vista machine.

My experience with print servers is that drivers are often not kept up to
date. Is your Vista machine 32 bit or 64 bit? If x64 does the manufacturer
have a 64 bit compatible driver?

Hi Guys, Thanks for all the help so far. The machine is running Vista
Home Premium version. I just heard back from Airlink and they are
asking if the Machine is running a 32 or 64 bit version. Also, the
printer is a Brother MFC 9700. Brother claims that the printer is
"Vista enabled" and is compatable with any Vista version. I did confirm
this by installing the printer locally and testing it and it worked. As
for the order of driver install, I installed the print server drivers
first, but Vista does not seem to install the drivers for the printer
after this. On an XP machine, as soon as you install the print server
software, XP immediately installs the drivers for the printer with no
prompting. Vista does not. It "sees" the printer make and model and
even lists it in the print server window, but it does not appear to
install the drivers.
