Well, that explains what happened. Your laptop must have onboard graphics,
that shares the main system RAM, rather than a discrete 'card' that some of
them have.

adaptor?

Yes, of course they are. Aero actually uses the VRAM in graphics cards.
Finally there is a use for all that power in graphics cards, apart from
games and 3D applications.
