That symptom may be caused by interference from an antivirus program.
Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus should be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

Email scanning in any antivirus should be disabled, for reasons
explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

If no improvement after disabling email scanning, consider upgrading
to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to suffering bad effects
from overly intrusive antivirus programs:

If you cannot provide enough information for some one to give you a
suggestion then you should not expect much in the way of help.

It helps if you quote the exact error message. Try this:
In the main screen of Windows Mail, (not the compose screen), go to=20
Tools, Options, Spelling.
First select another language, click Apply. Then reselect English and =
click OK.

Try using the correct server names, as in these instructions (for OE, but
it's the same for WM)

It's in the exact same place as in Outlook Express on XP...

Tools - Accounts - (youraccount) - Properties - General tab
E-mail address: ________
Change the Verizon address to the MSN address
OK
