| So somehow when i installed vista, the boot manager got set to the D: driver (dvd drive) so the only way to start the computer is to have the Vista install DVD in the driver. otherwise it says bootmgr not found. is there any way to fix this?

| That doesn't make any sense because you can't write files to a DVD drive, even if you have a formatted disk in it. You can only burn files to a DVD through an application specifically designed to do that.
You can verify this by putting a formatted DVD in your drive, opening a file manager, and trying to drag and drop a file onto the DVD. The process will be rejected.
It looks more like the situation when you're multi-booting because according to what you posted, you have an OS in both theD and C drives. This EXACTLY what will happen if you have Vista installed as the second partition on the drive and another Windows OS in the first partition -- Vista will write the boot manager files to the first Windows partition it finds. Which should be OK unless you later remove that drive or partition, in which case, the boot loader files will be gone.

| What, exactly, do you get when you try to boot without the DVD in the drive?
If the message is "Bootmgr not found", do the following:
1) Set your computer to boot from DVD (using the Boot setting in the BIOS)
2) Insert the Vista DVD and reboot
3) Vista will prompt you for language and keyboard layout options, then ask if you want to reinstall Vista or repair your installation. Select Repair.
4) The System Recovery Tool will take over
5) Choose Startup Repair
6) Reboot
Alternatively you could choose the Command Prompt option instead, and use the following command to fix the boot options only:
bootrec /fixboot
