hello ladies and guys im new here. i got stuck using vista when i bought this new laptop i just got. so far vista is a complete nightmare and i hate it with a passion. i have been a xp user sense the day it came out and refused to switch until i didnt have a choice in the matter. i look to this site to try and change my mind about vista. all i have figured out so far is that everything that takes no time to accomplish on xp takes a act of congress to get done on vista. i understand trying to idiot proof software but making it to where it treats you like a 5 year old that gets old quick. well you will be seeing me im sure

Welcome Dennis. Vista isn't as bad as you might think. If you could list your system specs that might help pinpoint you problem with it. If its a store bought lappy then it probably just need more memory, unfortunately the manufactures don't seem to put enough in them for Vista. To run Vista decent you should have at least 2g of ram.

Thanks and welcome.

Let me welcome you to the forum, but I got to be honest about realistic expectations -- if you're as negatively predisposed toward Vista as you indicate, I really doubt this board (or any other board, for that matter) is going to change your mind. I'm not being negative; I'm just being realistic.

Well with those specs Vista should be running like a champ. Just out of curiosity, how long have you had this PC? Vista likes to take its time getting optimized, especially if your installing alot of software all the time.

Yea, there's no question that Vista takes some getting used to.

MS did seem to move a lot of stuff around in Vista, so coming from an expert level in XP can make it difficult to figure out how to do the same tweaking in Vista. And while there are a host of Vista tweaking tools out there, some of them free, I prefer to do the tweaking manually -- which I suspect, is the same for you.

Also, Vista tightened up security a lot over XP, meaning the stuff that worked by default in XP often doesn't work in Vista until you changes some settings, often deep down in the bowels of the OS.

And finally, Vista seems to be following the same useability trend as XP, in that it takes two Service Packs before it finally delivers on the performance and features that were advertised. When SP 2 comes out, I think we may finally have a really good product.
