Windows Vista Home Premium SP1
Using BackUp and Restore Center - periodic Automatic Backup

Running successfully for several months.

Today new DVD called, loaded and formatted in the usual way but wrote only
250mb of zipped files before calling for another DVD.

The second DVD again only had, I discovered afterwards, 250mb data written
before another DVD was called upon which I abandoned the backup.

The only difference today is the use of new DVD+R instead of DVD-R.

Any ideas on what's happened/changed?

It appears that your DVD burner is not capable of burning DVD+R disks. Why
did you switch from -R to +R disks?

Thanks, Curious ... but this is not the answer!

I have subsequently written more than 1gb to one of the disks as a test
using drag'n'drop of a big folder in Windows Explorer, so I think it's not
the drive of drivers.
