Hi

I have a pair of harmon Kardon speakers which worked fine with XP and work intermittently fine with Vista.

Sometimes they just don't work. I turn them off and on again and they still don't work. Yet if for example I close myspace, then turn on speakers and re open myspace they work. Damn frustrating.

Regards

Two reasons why you might have sound problems in Vista but not in XP are SW and drivers. For Vista, MS completely removed the legacy Direct Sound layer. This forced sound card vendors to rewrite their drivers and to modify their SW. For the first six months that Vista was out, there were only beta versions of drivers and SW. A lot of this has matured somewhat over time so that now, there is a reasonably good selection of cards and SW.

Which is the long way of saying that you should check for the latest version of your sound chip/card drivers and SW. If what you have is six months old or worse, updating to the latest version could very well solve the problems.

Another issue is whether or not you're using analog audio or S/PDIF. The latter has only recently seen working drivers. Old versions of the driver were either absent S/PDIF, or were very buggy.

I think my drivers are up to date. Not sure how to find my sound card. Might i actually be better off buying newer speakers, these have been around a while

Thanks

You can certainly buy what you like, but I seriously doubt this is a speaker issue.

Give me a few specs about your system. We can figure out what sound card/ you're using and if your drivers are up to date.
