| my problem was if i restarted my laptop and hit ctrl alt del it would be fine. but if i did a Virus Scan (WebRoot) and i hit CTRL ALT DEL after i would see the problem.
Well, As i hear there are alot of ways to resolve this.In my case my computer was fine. But when i hit CTRL ALT DEL. the dreaded login Process came up
go on the Security Alerts or Security center feature. (Heres how you access it) hit start. Go to Control Panel. Hit "Security" Then hit Security Center.. Then hit User Account Control and if it's on. turn it off.
In my case that resolved the issue. I really hope this helps anyone thats reading this. And has the same problem

| Okay, I've been having this problem for the past couple of months but its only happened once in a while so I never really bothered about it however 2 weeks ago, its been happening every single day now and I have absolutely no idea what happened. I didn't install anything new or do anything major with my system, it just started happening. I've tried just about every solution on these 8 pages but with no results.
I've changed from AVG8 to Avast, disabled Windows Defender, disabled UAC (Can't tell if this method works because I had to re-enable as I typically use a standard account for normal useage and disabling it cuts me off from anything that needs administrator rights), done a system check (That sfc /scannow thing), checkdisk, run virus scan, Malware scan, Spyware scan and nothing has worked.
I've looked through Event viewer to see if anything occurred during the time I get the errors and I noticed this error popping out everytime it happens. I don't know if this is what caused the security options error or was just it a result of the error causing it to happen but I get this.
Unable to start a DCOM Server: {AB8902B4-09CA-4BB6-B78D-A8F59079A8D5}. The error:
"5"
Happened while starting this command:
C:\Windows\system32\DllHost.exe /Processid:{AB8902B4-09CA-4BB6-B78D-A8F59079A8D5}
When I looked through regedit to see what that registry is, the description reads 'Thumbnail cache out of Proc Server'.
Does anyone know if this is what is causing the error and anyone know how to solve it? I'm going crazy and am considering reformatting my computer as a last resort if I can't find a solution. |

| | I was getting that message also on my Gateway P-7805u notebook running Vista Premium x64. I would do a ctrl-alt-del in order to get into Task Manager and the message would appear . I discovered that this happened after I started HWmonitor, a freeware temperature sensor monitoring utility. I had a suspicion though, that this problem was really the result of an update to Webroot AntiVirus with Spysweeper 6.1.0.107 today 3-15-09. HWmonitor ran before and never caused this problem. Utilities like ccCleaner's registry integrity issue cleaner had suddenly become unbearably slow since that update. Webroot AV with SS had also become tortuously slow on it's scans. So, I uninstalled the Webroot software and ccCleaner has come back to life on it's scans. HWmonitor can be running while I do a ctrl-alt-del without the login failure message. I'll use Norton Internet Security to catch my spyware and viruses instead of Webroot. |

| Hi people.
Sorry for be registering myself only when I got a serious problem, but I really hope anybody can help me... even if I read all the thread and I couldn't find a solution.
My ASUS F3Sc laptop, bought December 2007, just started today to freeze. First, I was watching, today after woke up, an .rmvb file, and then it freezed just in the middle of it. The character was saying "I'll hope for you!" and then...
"I'll hope for you!"
"I'll hope for you!"
"I'll hope for you!"
"I'll hope for you!"
And so on... Then, I manually rebooted and tried to see the .rmvb again... and it happened again. I rebooted again and I quit, tought it was the file. But a few minutes after rebooting, the problem returned: Windows started to freeze, CTRL+ALT+DEL first worked but then it also freezed...
Then, I tried a restore point (it was from the moment I woke up and turned on the laptop), and I tried another (from April 1st). But it didn't work...
I read all the thread, and in the past 8 hours:
- I've uninstalled avast! and AVG Anti-Spyware and it remained crashing;
- I've disabled Windows Defender (in services of msconfig and in Windows Defender window) and it remained crashing;
- I've installed AVIRA and it remained crashing;
- I've turned off ALL the startup processes and it remained crashing (now I have Windows Live Messenger, AVIRA and Faststone Capture activated);
- I've disabled UAC and it remained crashing;
- ...
I ran (still with AVG and avast!) total system scans in safe mode, and they found nothing. I'm really getting out of chances... because when I go into safe mode all works great. So there is something that isn't doing well in normal mode... 
Sometimes I do CTRL+ALT+DEL and the black screen appears, showing after it the message "Failure - Security Options - Logon process has failed to create the security options dialog" bla bla bla... (in portuguese, my Vista language, that's why I couldn't get here faster...), but sometimes it just freezes...
Some people say tried to reinstall Windows Vista and it didn't worked, so I was trying not to do it before I'm sure it would work...
I would appreciate your help, if you know how to fix this now... I know nobody answered in the past 20 days, but I don't know what to do anymore...

EDIT (April 5th morning): I tried to enter in safe mode with network and... bang, 5 minutes later. So, maybe there's a process activated online that keeps freezing Windows. Can this help? I thought of seeing which processes are active in Safe Mode vs. Safe Mode With Network, but I don't know if it's a process that runs when the computer starts or just after... |

| | Iv been having this trouble for a week and seemed to be getting worse and more frequent everytime I would boot my pc. Did scans with McAfee, Norton, Windows Defender but would find no problems. After reading all these post seemed most likely to be Defender itself causing the problem so deactivated it on start up and fixed my trouble for about 20 hours before my pc locked up again. FINALLY decided to give Avast a try and it picked up a on a Trojan Horse after the first scan. PC has been running for about another 20 hours now without trouble so think the problem has been solved. If I do not make another post soon then everything is okay. Good luck everyone. GRRRR!!! My pc has stopped locking up but was still having trouble with programs continuing to stop responding for no reason which I forgot to mention before. Solution...restored everything back to default factory condition, to bad I didnt have eveything on backup =.= |

| | i am having the same problem, but i have removed avg and disable windows defender... and there is 0 imporvement, i have found though, that when i run msn, or web messenger, it seems to occur quicker.... and i also noticed i can be running an online game ie guilwars in a window and have that still run while it freezes up... this will end up with the computer crashing in 5or 10mins but it is still progress. can anyone have any ideas as to what the solution is, i am meant to be doing alot of work and essays but so far i am getting no where..... |

| | Me too... Mine's a week old Dell Tower and the problem first showed up after installing a boot hack that disables driver signing enforcement (ReadyDriverPlus). Didn't think much of it because I have a goofy display adapter driver from ATI and to me, it looked like the display adapter card driver was failing. After installing Norton AV2009 on this brand new computer, I began seeing incredibly long boot times with the inevitable "Login process has failed..." following a black screen. Was able to duplicate it pretty much at will using Crtl+Alt+Del. In a couple of instances I did a forced reboot. At this point I have not tried to do a system restore to a previous checkpoint. If what I've done doesn't stick, I'm going to try the chkdsk trick next. This is really infuriating - XP was/is a pretty stable OS. How could you do this much damage in one fell swoop, Redmond? So - here's what I've tried so far - and it seems to be working - Removed ReadyDriverPlus driver signing enforcement bypass hack
- Disabled readyboostdrive in msconfig
- Disabled Windows Defender in msconfig
- Disabled Windows Firewall
- Uninstalled NAV2009, then cleaned remnants using Norton_Removal_Tool.exe
- Installed Avast 4.8.1335 Home & did a full scan (negative results)
This is an amazing problem because it seems we're all fixing different root causes. POS comes to mind as the root cause...

| When I Binged for the "Login process has failed" message, there were a lot of responses, dating back to the original public launch of Vista. It happened to people using desktops and laptops of all makes and models, with just about every configuration of HDs and other hardware and software imaginable. Also all versions of Vista, both before and after SP1. And every imaginable solution was tried, from replacing the HD to reinstalling Vista to . . well, pretty much everything.
Some reported short-term success. Most simply vanished from the threads with no indication of success.
For me, it started a couple of weeks ago on a 7-month-old custom-built PC running Vista Ultimate 64. Most of the software others thought might be the culprit is not on my PC and never has been (one nice thing about a custom build - you don't get all the pre-installed junk).
I made no major changes prior to start of this problem, altho MS doubtless made many to Vista. FYI, I have automatic updates turned off, but have discovered MS can - and does - bypass that. So, given everything I've read and experienced about this problem, it seems pretty obvious it is a Vista issue, one that - or so it appears - can be triggered at any time by anything, altho I suspect there is some common element in there somewhere, but one only MS could possibly know. And, so far, I haven't found any suggested solution from them.
If anyone else has, please advise. Otherwise, I guess we just have to wait for Win7 and pray it is not as big a disaster as Vista (altho beta results I've seen to date indicate it may be even worse).

| | Same pb here, Computer getting slow somehow weeks after Vista installation, error on the HDD USB driver, and "failure of security option" with "log process ... ". I called Western Digital as mentioned oin some well advised blogs. Their support services wanted to send me 2 X 2T HDD to replace my "defective drives", ie new Vista installation for me :-(. I insisted to talk to technical support at WD. They then asked me about Raid 1. My HDD are NOT Raid 1 compliant and get out of sync over time... I disabled Raid 1 and that fixed the problem, so to speak (ie I am beyond the return policy date and now the proud owner of 4 TB storage on 2 HDD - that is buying me quite some milage...). Hope this helps.

| | Hi I'm posting from work: the computer is a 6 month old HP w1907 desktop, running Win Vista (Home Prem) SP 2 on Pentium Dual Core 2.5 GHz w/6 Gigs of RAM. It stopped working two days ago in a manner similar to what others have described already. It booted up fine (don't need a login password) and the desktop showed up normally. However when trying to open any program that's when the trouble starts: the mouse would go into the "circle" meaning it was thinking/processing or whatever you call it, but never finish. When I tried to click on the program again, or another program or the Start menu, it wouldn't be long before the entire screen would turn opaque white. Several more minutes of thinking would go by, and sometimes the screen would turn black! Couple more minutes and there would be that error message popping up: Login process failed to create security options dialogue. Failure: Security Options Plus while trying to force a shutdown I saw that it seems that "Power2Go" which is a DVD burning program is stopping Windows from shuttind down completely. (Anyone have problems with this?) I noted some of the suggestions in this particular thread (disabling Windows Defender, running antivirus or re-installing it, and a corrupted sidebar or the program within. Turns out the computer (or another user after me) fixed itself. But just in case, I did uncheck "Automatic computer scan" in Defender and closed the Power2Go sidebar program. Hopefully someone can provide tips to prevent it from happening again. But if not, y'all are not alone. This is the second Hewlett Packard PC that I have had a bad experience with and I just don't trust them very much. VLS |
