| | Hello Everyone, I have Vista Home Premium on two year old PC that just recently got Logon process has failed to create the security options. Dialog box with failure security option when waiting for the welcome screen to appear. I read through postings on various sites and decided to do check disk. This fixed the problem after I recently installed an HP wireless printer. Also windows has been trying to update and gets hung on last step after leaving PC on all night. I had to shut PC with on/off and that may have had something to do with this issue appearing. Anyhow, if you can F10 and start in safe mode with command promt then type CHKDSK C:/F If message returned from this command states drive in use say Y to schedule at restart and then type command shutdown. /F is to fix any problems found.

| I hope the readyboost soution will work for me - i had exactly the same probem. Everything worked fine until I first used my new Ipod Nano. I already disabled all apple services but the problem still remained. So i'll now try your solution (disabling readyboost).
Edit:I thought it worked but it didn't - i had the same system-crash again... |

| | Hi everyone, I'm new here and have been researching the same annoying problem as everyone else with Vista crashing and then not being able to reboot or shut down the unresponding program, without having the computer freeze up and get that dialog box. So far, my main problems have been using IE7 and having certain websites lock up, crash, and not be able to shut down or restart using the Cnt/Alt/Del method. I've tried all kinds of remedies, disk scan, hard drive check, system restore, repair mode, you name it. I read some people talking about having problems with the security protections, so I started playing around with mine and found out that EVERY PROBLEM that I've had so far is related to the security on the computer! I have XP on my other computer and have NEVER had a crash in 4 years!! Everything has worked great and I've never had a problem working with anything! Someone may have brought this up elsewhere, but I haven't actually found it. It seems like anytime you want to install anything, you need to shut down ALL the virus protection and everything will load just fine! If I leave it on, a lot of times the whole thing crashes and I have to manually restart. The MAIN CULPRIT I found that was causing IE7 to lock up, was running the enabled protection mode. As soon as I shut that off, none of the websites that were freezing up froze anymore, and I was also able to hit Cnt/Alt/Del and actually have the window pop up without a freeze. I don't really think that function should have to be on if you've got all the other security running, which should cover viruses, spyware, etc. I'm using Panda right now, by the way. Leaving all the security on even affects some of the other programs not connected to the internet. After I shut it all off, I wasn't getting errors in Paintshop Pro, like I was when it was turned on. I hope this might help some other people, if you haven't found a solution yet! |

If you haven't turned off your virus control and taken off the enabled protection in Explorer, try that and see if it will update without crashing. I've left my enabled protection off permanently, but I turn the virus control off when I'm trying to load something, and back on again when its finished. So far it hasn't crashed since I've done this. |

| I just experienced some of the same symptoms described above, about 3 days into a clean install on a new computer. Based on my experience and the wide range of software or conditions people are attributing it to, I think the majority of the issues are HDD related... (i could be wrong or there really could be multiple causes, but after 4 hours of frustration, everything seems fixed and fast again now)
1. Built new computer
Intel C2Q9400
GA-EP45-UD3P
8GB PC-8500
Geforce GT9800
160GB WD Caviar (Vista64 OS drive)
500GB WD Caviar (MP3s, misc music related stuff)
1TB WD Green (Videos)
1TB Hitachi Desktar (Temporary, Downloads, Backups)
Pioneer DVDRW
EDIT: installed Vista Ultimate 64 on 1/30 , installed a bunch of junk. worked fine, enabled AHCI in BIOS, messed things up. data still available through linux livecds, but decided to reinstall vista since I didn't want to live with a messy install, and want t do a backup image once i've gota clean install with all basic drivers and features in place.
2. Vista Ultimate 64, installed 1/31 w/ AHCI enabled, fully updated - no problems
3. installed a /bunch/ of stuff (control panels, utilities, drivers, plugins, software, shareware) and ran some HD .mkvs and encoding software- no problems.
4. plugged in old Windows XP HDD (WD Green 500GB) on external SATA connected to GSATA ports (separate from Intel Main 6 port SATA controller) to back up some old files. Windows complained about updating disk drive drivers and made me reboot a few times before it stopped complaining about new updates or hardware, but after that, the transfer went smoothly. (Intel Matrix Storage Driver 8.5 BTW)
5. Two days later, forgot that WinXP drive was still connected, sitting on a tabletop, with no airflow.
6. windows won't install java JRE, JDK, or OpenOffice. installers hang on computing required space, or flashes for a second, disappears but is still stuck in the background. try rebooting, hangs on shutdown screen, let sit for 20min, then hard reboot. reboot takes 5 min to login
7. Reboot again: on shutdown, "Error: Login process....." reboot again takes 5+min, but on startup, windows does a chkdsk on H: and I:, the WinXP and WinXPRecover Partitions.
8. Remember that "H: and I:" (a WD Caviar 500GB) are sitting on a desktop with no ventilation. Hot too the touch.
9. shutdown. disconnect external HD.
10. Reboot. No Problems
So i'm not sure if its a) an HDD error indicating heat or disk failure b) a windows error if you have an old hd with a windows install attached (possibly related to how windows indexes and installers search for previous installs) c) related to some hdd not behaving when controlled with certain power management commands d) all or e) none of the above, and my fix was a fluke
In any case, if you have an old computer case with little airflow and a large HD as your OS drive, do yourself a favor and check your temperatures and get a HDD heatsink and fan. Don't use a giant HDD as your OS drive, it'll only make things more difficult to backup, repair, defrag etc. Use livecds to see if its a mobo/card/psu/HD issue.
HTH someone else Cheers

| | I too have had a bunch of problems lately, including a "phantom" IE running - Task Manager will sometimes show IE running, when it is not, and when I try to End Process, I get the "permission" window. I don't use the vista firewall - I use Zone Alarm. For the past few days, I have been getting alerts telling me that various applications....that I didn't even know existed...are trying to connect to the 'net. This has never happened before. This weekend, I am going to uninstall everything that I have recently installed, and go back to the last known "good" restore point, then shut down my Norton AV and try to reinstall my software. I'll let you know on Monday how it goes. |

| Hi guys, been reading this thread for a while and decided to join the forums and post. I had pretty much the exact same problem, I brought this computer around June time and it worked perfectly up until around November when MS pushed out a update that failed for some reason, shortly after that all the problems started, my problem though isn't nearly as bad as you guys though. My problem would that after playing a game such as World of Warcraft or if I watch alot of online videos etc..the whole system would slow up and then Internet Explorer would display a horribly messed up image, Firefox would display the message content encoding error and if I try to access the taskmanager...Login Process has failed....you get the idea.
This image is what IE brings up during the problem.
http://img201.imageshack.us/my.php?image=iemesspb8.jpg
The problem got so bad that I was forced to reinstall vista, and immediately the problem came back but this time the actual Login Process has failed error never came back, but all the same symptoms of it are still there. Theres actually very little installed on this computer right now.
AVG8
Zonealarm
World of Warcraft
The Current methods i've tried are:
Removing AVG8 and replaced it with Avast - Problem persists
Swopping out graphics cards with a brand new one - Problem persists
Reinstalling vista - Problem Persists
Scanned Memory with Memx86 and vistas scanner - All memory working perfectly
Scanned HD for problems - no problems detected
unplugged external WD HD - Problem persists (readyboost enabled)
The current services I have disabled -
Windows Search
Readyboost
Windows Defender
Volume Shadow Copy (System Restore)
Superfetch
Problem still persists, only way for me to do anything is once i've played warcraft or after a couple of hours watching online movies is to immediately restart otherwise I have to do an improper shutdown. I read about the enabled protection mode and i'm actually trying that method right now. |

| | Hi, I just signed up to this forum so I can add my experience to this thread. Pardon me if this is repeated information. I ran into the ""same kind" of problem after installing Windows Live OneCare. My brand new laptop started to freeze after running for about 30 minutes to an hour. Then when I try to Ctrl+Alt+Del, the screen goes dark. Then after a few moments, I get the infamous dialog. Dismissing the dialog only returns back to the frozen state where only the mouse will work. All previously running applications are frozen and I have to do a hard reboot. After rebooting, the PC will do the same thing again. My problem came down to bad disk access, where accessing certain files on my secondary drive would cause the computer to freeze as described above. I found this out because started backing up my drives thinking that I will have to reinstall Vista, and the PC would freeze while trying to copy the same [bad] files. I know because I would reboot and the backup process would freeze at the same file, and there were more than one. Also, when the PC frozed, I can see the drive access light blinkning endlessly. I completed my back up and reformatted my secondary drive, restored the good files and reinstalled OneCare. Everything seems to be working fine now. It seems that while OneCare is scanning files in the background, it would run into the bad files and the system would lock up. The same as it did if I tried to read the bad files while making my backup. So, if your problem is like mine, you will see the disk access light flashing while the PC is frozen, or in another poster's case, you will have drive head thrashing, or worse.... Another observation. Before installig OneCare, I was never able to completely do a defragmentation of the secondary drive. Assuming it is because of the bad files. The defragmentation process would freeze after awhile and I had to cancel out of it. So there you go. I had some bad sectors or something and the OS was not able to return disk errors back to the running program. I didn't have a disk utility on hand to check for bad sectors, so I did it the brute force way. Hope this helps you guys.

| | My 6 month old laptop had the same problem with the "logon process has failed..." message. After trying a few different things including a system restore the problem still existed. I also ran a sfc/scannow and it found no problems with my hard drive. Two days ago I turned off windows defender, sidebar and Vistas UOC and the laptop has been problem free since then. |
