| | I had the exact same problem and paid $ to have it fixed the technichian told me it was pirated software(I illegally installed vista ultimate)as soon as I reinstalled vista home basic the problem went away. I don't know if you have any software like that but it could be the culprit. |

| Experienced this problem for a month or so where after a few hours the system would fail to start programs due to lack of memory and CTRL+ALT+DEL would produce "Logon process has failed to create security options dialog." After trying various forum solutions with no success, I found that once I closed down Skype (running in the System Tray), the problem has gone away. Hope this helps someone as it frustrated me having to reboot 3 times a day.
Cheers

| I too am having the same problem. I have Vista Business, and right after I log in, everything freezes. After seeing all the posts about AVG and NIS, I too have AVG, so I will try uninstalling it and hopefully this will solve my problems. I am currently restoring to an older point as well... This is quite annnoying since I was downloading Crysis and playing Prey while this happened, I just hope it wasn't related to that. Thx for the posts guys.

| | Hi First post,, Had the Security options error and bad hangs using Vista Home, Had a few quirks over the past few weeks. even to the extent that vista went through the boot process, then started to delete files automatically... then went to boot and requested i re enter the windows licence. Did this and all was well but had the hang problem every so often may be every 5 boots. went safe mode and checked it all out and could not see any think. Had automaitc update on so turned this of and uninstalled the last updates one by one. after doingf this to the last updates on the 23/11/08 things improved but then the security option raised its ugly head again. reading previous i then looked at defender, which i had previously disabled as i was running kapersky full, to my horror it was enabled with full functionality. just disabled it fully, droped all flags on sub catergories defore disabling the bulk options and saved. Voila... just booted clean for the first time in 3 days. will see how it goes. which update would have turned defender on? |

| | Hello everyone! I am new to forums and I am experiencing the same lock-up issues that have been mentioned along with the "Logon process..." message occasionly. The lock-ups are very severe now (basically on 30 seconds on normal boot) but safe mode is working just fine which leads me to believe it is a virus or program conflict and not the hardware. I have a Toshiba Satellite with dual Intel 1.83Gz, 4 GB of ram and am running Vista Home Premium. I have tried not running Windows Defender, Firewall, one spyware (SpyBot) and one security package at a time (TrendMicro). Nothing has help. Not System Restore, virus sweeps, anything. A few people have mentioned finding a virus as the source of the problem and I was wondering if the name of the virus or the removal instructions could be posted either here or if someone could send me a link. A virus seems to be the only thing that fits the symptoms and since I am currently living in China (the home of all things virus and malware) I would like to at least rule a very good, hidden virus out of the mix before taking it for service in hopes it is bad memory or hard drive. Thanks for any help you can be. |

| OK -- as a general rule, if a problem disappears when you boot into safe mode, that means that the problem is most likely caused by something that is being loaded at startup -- not a hardware problem, nor malware.
The standard way to detect startup-related problems is as follows:
1) Type "msconfig" in the start area and press Enter
2) Select the startup tab
3) Uncheck all the startup items
4) reboot
If the problem is gone, it's one of the startup items, and you have to continue as follows:
1) Re-select the startup tab
2) Check the first unchecked item
3) Reboot
If the problem returns, the item you just checked is the one causing the problem. If not, repeat this process for each unchecked item.

| | Attempted the modified boot with no Startups and the problem immediately occurred again. The only program that started up (even though I unchecked it as well) was my TrendMicro suite. Since I can not go into the program under a normal boot to change the settings (lock-ups much too quickly) and in safe mode the normal program does not run except for an automated virus scan when you select it, I do not know of any way to match sure it does not load on startup short of uninstalling and I do not have the original install discs to reinstall on this side of the Pacific. Since it still have the same problem even with minimal normal boot does that point to a possible hardware problem instead or still the possibility of a virus? And if it does look like a virus should I start a topic on the Security forum? |

| Unless I misunderstood what you said, the problem does NOT occur in safe mode. If the problem was drivers or hardware, the same ones are in use in safe mode and should then exhibit the same problems.
You said you already tried System Restores and that didn't fix it, right?
The other possibilities are that a virus got itself attached to either an application file or a system file. If it was the first, unchecking all the startup items (so no applications are running) should have corrected it -- and it didn't.
The least destructive way to repair system files is to do an "sfc /scannow" from an elevated command prompt and let Vista scan, repair, and replace the system files.
If it still finds nothing, it's likely that you have a registry entry that is running a virus program but keeping it's entry out of the branch that gets replicated in the Startup tab. That's going to be really hard to find.

| Hi guys!
Since 1 week, I have the exactly same problem. First I did not get an error message, so I just reinstall the whole system on my HP 8510p notebook (T7500 2.2ghz, Vista Business SP1, ati 2600 graphics, 2 Gb Ram, Kaspersky Internet Security).
Now, 4 days after the reinstall I have the problem agian. Every time max 2. minutes after startup the system hangs. I can just move the mouse and luckily I got once the error message you all got.
Because it is a notebook, I cant set the hdd on another connector. Also deactivating the DVD device in the harware manager of vista did not bring a solution.
Before the 1 reinstall, deinstalling KIS, using systemrestore or deactivating the security center, ready boost of vista did not help.
Do I have to disable the DVD device in the Bios?
When it is the iastor.sys driver of Intel (I have a ICH8M chipset on a 945 Board I guess), why arent there any problems in the safe mode? While loading the safe mode, you can see how it loads different drivers, one of them is the iastor.sys
Any other solutions? |
