I thinks its time to start uninstalling things one by one until you find what was causing it.

Asus-SLI Deluxe, AMD x2 4400 (oc'd to 5000), x1900xtx (oc'd), 2GB Corsair XMS RAM 2-3-3-6 (4x512), 500GB Maxtor HDD w/ 32mb cache, 300GB Maxtor HDD w/ 16mb cache, Creative Audigy 4 (Daniel Driver Set), HVR-1100 Dvb-t hybrid TV card, 580W Hiper Type M PSU.

Just encountered this problem today, running vista ultimate. Sorted for me by booting into safe mode and disabling the sidebar under the default user registry key. Thought I'd try that before touching the AV software as I'd noticed the clock on the sidebar was failing to load each time and the 2 gadgets below were struggling with their web access. Thanks to everyone on here who's suggested help, as it might have taken my brain a while to figure out disabling the sidebar otherwise.

Hi All,

I have suffered with this for months. And really have no real idea what is happening, event logs are clear etc.

Is IE the main culprit for you as well?

And has anyone actually fixed it (without new HDD or reinstall of Vista)?

BTW I am using ESET NOD32 (as suggested above) it is not immune from the problem.

Neill

SALVATION!

Finally, finally I fixed it for me myself.

It was VERY tricky to find out but if HDD activity-freeze occurs, let it go for 4-5 minutes. After reboot, look at the event manager and chose "errors".

probably you will find, that all the errors diskussed here are logged BEFORE the freeze acutally happens, maybe were talking about less than one second. If you let the error "proceed" long enough (give it enogh time to log itself to event viewer), you'll find another error caused by "iastor.sys" - that is the Intel AHCI-driver for my ICH8R southbridge. This error is always the last before the freeze.

...and it is caused by you CD/DVD-ROM, most probably a Samsung / TSSTcorp model. The error seems related to the IDE/SATA bridging, these devices do. After unplugging both, my LG and TSSTcorp drive, nothing ever happened again. Putting the LG back on - no errors at all. Putting the TSST back on - freeze after 3-5 minutes of being up.

Good luck to anyone out there!!!

Dear All (..........my solution)

I've been following this topic for a couple of weeks or so since my Evesham Voyager, Vista Ultimate 32bit, started displaying very similar traits - starting with slowing down, then the "Error message: "Login process has failed to create the security options dialog.....", getting increasingly regular freezes until eventually the pc wouldnt even get started, but with the mouse still working, but not even being able to start the Task Manager etc etc. I had also tried installing SP1 to solve

Like many others I suspected memory & HD, but these checked out OK on full testing & I had it on good authority that as long as you can boot into Safe Mode then there is probably nothing fundamentally wrong with the hardware and so its down to corrupted software / files. To cut a long story short (like others I went off on a few dead end tangents) the culprit was the Bullguard AV system. I completely uninstalled it from Safe Mode with as good as immediate success - & that was 3 days ago, & now back at full speed.

Since then I've downloaded a clean version of the latest AV software suite (BG8.0), re-installed it and its basically working all OK. Further info (from their own forums) shows that Bullguard still have a problem (Windows defender doesn't recognise that the firewall and AV are installed - but that's a minor issue compared with a non working laptop). I supose this has to be natural - the more difficult and complicated MS make vista in order to protect it against attack the more difficult it must be for the AV products to control and manage such a system, I think I've learnt that the AV software itself is probably going to be the most likely culprit in most cases

I'd be interested to hear if other have similar experience........

Yuk. I have been having this ever since I got this computer, about 5 months ago (Dell Inspiron 530, Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 processor @ 2.4 GHz, 3GB RAM, Vista Premium 32-bit w/ SP1). AV is dirty old McAfee (yuk, but I paid for it so...).

The only (very unsatisfactory) way I have been able to manage it is to get up and walk away -- and save my work frequently! Often I've found that if I leave it for ten minutes or more it will sort itself out, then I can reboot it normally. When I have pulled the plug it often goes straight to the splashscreen and then a blinking cursor for up to 20 minutes before giving me the option to restart normally or in safe mode. Following some of the advice here really hasn't helped at all (although it hasn't hurt), but I like many others am nearly at my wit's end. Some days or even weeks will be fine, sometimes it will happen 3 or 4 times over as many hours.

I guess all I really have to add to the confusion is that this has been happening to me since the computer was pretty much out of the box, and that I don't seem to have many if any characteristics in common with many of the other users (re: hardware or software); I remember hissing and screaming about it within a week of owning it, esp as I had bought it to replace an old, slow, dying machine with XP that in the end has turned out to be far more stable than my new speedy flash one!

Where's Dr House when you need him.

In future you will have learned to take a computer back to the store the moment you find a problem with it in the first few weeks.

The best course of action now is to try out everything in this thread, you can always system restore / put everything how it was if nothing works.

Hmm, this seems like a virus to me. It is forcing everyone to uninstall any form of protection on their computers to allow them to run. This means that the virus can now run freely and do whatever it so chooses.

Ugh... I think I am in over my head here!  I have a new (1 mo) HP laptop with Vista Home Premium 64 and started experiencing the errors described here in the last 48 hours.

With the help of this thread, I uninstalled NIS, disabled Windows Defender and Sidebar, and though it is better - still having the problem.  I haven't installed anything suspect - I think just AdobeCS3, Acrobat Pro 8, Quickbooks 2008, and Office 2003.  And a print driver.

I am in the process now of backing up some files that I don't want to lose, then need to figure out my next step.  I don't have any experience with system restores, but it sounds like restoring back to several days ago might what I need to try.

I first experienced this in Quickbooks, perhaps after installing some quickbooks updates.   It seems like my initial stalls were when trying to print forms or set up printers in quickbooks.  I recently accepted some Adobe CS3 updates as well.  I guess I should look into removing those updates but it doesnt sound like any of you found your culprit in programs like these, so i don't want to go trashing stuff I don't have to.

I realize my post is not entirely coherent - it has been many years since I have had to get this technical in windows and I don't really know if I have the skills to pull off some of what you describe above.  If I get stumped after trying to restore, where should I look for help on this - call vista support?  If I am within the return timeframe, should I take this thing back to the store?  If I did, wouldn't this happen again once I reinstalled all the same programs to another vista machine?

Any guidance is appreciated! Thanks, Christine
