I know I may be opening a can of worms here but I'd like to know what some of you think is the best Linux distribution to load and co-exist with Vista on the same drive.

I have a 250gb internal SATA that in total I'm only using about 50g's of. I'd like to partition this drive off into 2 - 125gb partitions and load Linux. I haven't played with Linux much in the last few years so I'm kinda behind on the various distributions and I suspect some may co-exist with Vista better than others.

Any opinions?

I'm no linux buff myself. I burnt an ubuntu disc to install and may do in the future. Like I say i'm not 'up' on linux but I would say ubuntu is best to choose.

Asus-SLI Deluxe, AMD x2 4400 (oc'd to 5000), x1900xtx (oc'd), 2GB Corsair XMS RAM 2-3-3-6 (4x512), 500GB Maxtor HDD w/ 32mb cache, 300GB Maxtor HDD w/ 16mb cache, Creative Audigy 4 (Daniel Driver Set), HVR-1100 Dvb-t hybrid TV card, 580W Hiper Type M PSU.

5.0 score on Vista Ultimate x64, 6040 3DMark 06' score on XP

Ubuntu 7.10 is a good place to start. It is really good for beginners and pretty stable. Very good support on their forums - http://ubuntuforums.org/

When I first started with Linux, I was told that I would end up trying at least 5-6 distros. Others that I would recommend trying are PC LinuxOS and MintLinux.

The best thing about Linux distros are, they're free.

Well, I would like to give it a try, again.... Every couple of years I load Linux on something and suddenly remember why I de-installed it the previous time. But, I have enough disk space and I'm curious to see if its evolved much since the last time I wiped it.

Due to popular demand, I downloaded a copy of Ubuntu and think I will give that a shot for now.

Anybody got any installation tips before I start? It will be going on 1/2 of a 250gb drive with Vista on it.

Back up everything.

The installer for Ubuntu is pretty straight forward but back up your stuff first.
