Glad you got it sorted! Too busy thinking about dodgy connections than a dodgy cable.

I don't know why, but the cable you got off ebay may be an older PATA cable w/ lesser pins. There is usually an older 40 wire cable and the newer 80 wire one. The 80 wire one is made for use with ATAPI5/UDMA4, I suspect that the cable which worked for you probably is the 80 wire one which has the blue colored connector on one end which hooks up to the motherboard.
