I'm writing for my friend, she's recently got a new computer with Windows Vista Basic preinstalled. Well she has a ton of WMV files she's downloaded over the years and none of them will play in Windows Media Player 11. It keeps giving her a error message saying something about the codec which I think is weird cause it's a default codec in Windows Media player right? Anyway, she's tried downloading several codec packs and even Media Player Classic to see if that would work but it was all to no avail. Another strange thing is that I downloaded a mpg and re-encoded it to WMV with Windows Media Encoder using my Xp machine and it plays fine on her computer. Is there anyway to make the other WMV files work on her Vista Machine?

Download the windows media coder installer from MS and they'll work fine.

Your assumption about codecs is wrong, with WMC installed they will all play regardless of which version of the player is used. Somewhere in the blurb for WMP 11 it does make a note of this for earlier versions that have created wmv files.

cyclic, I downloaded the WM9C installer and sent it to her but when she tried to install it Vista gave this error:
"This version of Windows Media Player codecs can be installed only on windows 2000, windows xp and windows server 2003" And then it went on to say: "this program is blocked due to compatibility issues".

So is there anyway to make it install? Like force Vista to accept it? As you can tell I know absolutely zip about Vista. Thanks for any help you're willing to provide with this.

Try the Codec pack which is located in our Vista Downloads section.

Tried the codec pack didn't work. As well as a few more codec packs online. None of them seemed to work. I have no clue what's going on with her Vista. I'm glad I stuck with Windows Xp now.
