Because it's there.

Memory not used is memory wasted.

Damn! I wish Ubuntu could do something else beside provide a newsgroup
interface!

Then those with Linux could get some productive work done, or even play a
game, and not bother normal folk.

How about these things?:

Email
Surf the web
Burn CDs.
Rip CDs.
Listen to music.
Watch vidoes/DVDs.
Scan and print.
Spreadsheets.
Presentations
Newsgroups.
HTML editing.
Games like Chess, Tetris, all kinds of solitaire, etc.
Make videos.
Download photos from a camera and organize them.
Translations.
Use a dictionary
Learn how to touch type.
Edit images.
Send and receive a fax.
Take screenshots.
Create .PDF files.
Create and use a data base.
Instant messaging with over 10 different programs in one including
Windows Live Messenger.
IRC.
Bluetooth.

and much more!

What you can't do with Ubuntu:

Worry about:
WPA and WGA raising their ugly heads,
DRM,
Viruses,
Root kits,
Spyware,
and
Malware.

You consider yourself "normal folk"? LOL!

So, if you had 128 GB of RAM, Vista would use it all? Puhlease, Bub.
Vista doesn't just use a lot of RAM, it *needs* a lot of RAM or it won't
run!

My Ubuntu install does all the things I listed. You don't like that for
some stupid reason but that's your problem.

How come when I copy a 4-6GB file the memory does not change much? I do
not believe with my 8GB Vista x64 that Vista has any decent file
caching. If it does, it is broken.

Linux/UNIX on the other hand can allocate unused memory for file buffers
and makes such activities like copy of a large file go much faster. But
this is not a Vista trait.

It does. But it doesn't run MS-Windows rootkits if that is what you
mean. Even comes with OpenOffice, no extra charge and no license keys to
worry about.

Yep, I get lots done faster in Linux, I don't have to wait as long for
the network copies and downloads of big files.
