Both myself and my colleague are having issues with dual screens (extended
desktop) in Vista after applying SP1. I am running a 19" and a 17" at 1280 x
1024. The problem occurs when coming back to the computer after it has been
locked for some time and the secondary monitor does not display. This also
causes another issue. Ghost software (supposedly from the secondary monitor
side) will not appear on the main monitor but can be clicked on. I cannot do
anything with the start menu and cannot right click the desktop to get
Display Settings.

I can press windows key + R to get the run command and so far I have been
using: shutdown -l to logout. I am sure there will be a command to bring up
the display menu to reset resolution and set up dual display again. But this
is a real pain.

One thing I haven't tried and this is an obvious first try when things go
wrong is update the driver (onboard Intel graphics). I will update if an
updated driver fixes the issue. But I would be interested to know if anyone
else noticed this.

Matt,

I'd definitely suggest getting the latest video driver from the
manufacturer's site, as compared to Windows Update. WUP has been known for
causing incorrect driver downloads/installs in the past.

Went to Intel site and downloaded the latest driver... upon installation I
got a message saying I must get the driver from the PC manufacturers site...
Using a Dell Optiplex however the driver on the Dell site is old! So I used
Windows Update to get the newer one from there...

This morning when I came to work the problem was gone My colleague is
about to apply the same update to see if it solves the same issue. My guess
is it will.
