Reformatting/Reinstalling Vista. I have a hard time understanding how this installation might turn out more nicely than the original, but on the off chance that it was just a bad install, I am going to try it. I am guessing it will look fine for at least a few weeks before getting wacky again if it is going to, like it did before.

We'll see...

RE: [SOLVED] Error message: "Login process has failed to create the security options dialog"

Thanks --

I have tried everything I can short of taking the back off and trying to moved the DvDROM drive to different ports -- I am considering doing that but am afrail I will void some sort of warranty. And I gotta find a tiny screwdriver.

I did get my files backed up. I got an outlook backup a week ago but can't seem to get Outlook to hang in there with me long enough to get the last week's emails backed up, too.

I think this must be a screwy installation of vista because I didn't have any restore points and although I was able to manually create one it still wasnt automatically creating one every day as it was supposed to. And when I tried to go to System Protection (to turn on this feature), as the windows help files directed, it brought up what seemed to be the wrong dialog box - one titled System Properties that had none of the same fields and tabs that the help files were directing me to find. Strange...

So I guess we are going back to the store. I don't feel confident buying another vista machine at this point, especially after hearing what you have to say about it. So I need to figure out if I can buy a new laptop with XP that will meet my needs (I am a graphic designer) or maybe consider a mac. I was tempted this time around but I was so comfortable with XP that i didn't want to depart that far from my comfort level. Plus, I'd have to rebuy some software for which I already owned windows versions. But Vista has been such an unpleasant experience - between these problems and just because it is different enough from XP that my comfort level is lost anyway... sigh. Or maybe just go back to this old trusty duct-taped machine for a while.

If you have any advice for what you'd buy to replace the returned one, I'd love to hear it.

I sincerely appreicate your help thus far.

Christine

RE: [SOLVED] Error message: "Login process has failed to create the security options dialog"

Unfortunately, your situation is not as unique as you may think. Over 18 months after Vista was released to the public, it is still plagued with basic problems such as Windows Explorer crashing, Windows Update failing, wireless disconnects and droputs, inability to connect properly to USB hard drives, and others. And yeah, I know that XP went through the same "growing pains" when it came out -- but providers are supposed to get better at stuff over time. It's not like this is the first OS that Redmond has produced.

So, my sympathies are entirely with the folks (like you) who continue to have problems with an OS that is (IMHO) still NOT ready for prime time.

As to the backup and external USB hard drive problems, these continue and there are no general cures for them.

Sorry.

RE: [SOLVED] Error message: "Login process has failed to create the security options dialog"

Thanks, WAW8. I will give that tool a try. I actually had a couple good hours today after finding and uninstalling a inappropriate scanner driver that I accidentally installed a few days ago when trying to get an old scanner working. Seemed ok for a while and I got nervous without any AV installed and tried to install the Norton360 I purchased for my older laptop. Installation didn't finish (wasnt standing there to see if it was a crash or if there were any errors) but there were definately remnants of that left.

I am sadly thinking that a return is going to have to be attempted - I hate to think of starting over with all of that setup (let alone finding my awol receipt) but am also very skeptical that I won't run into these same problems again if I get a replacement with the same specs. It could be because I have been immersed in reading forums all day reporting the same situation with various suspected culprits, but this seems like a pretty pervasive issue. In your opinion, is this fairly unique or very commonplace? What do I have to do to avoid this again? Thoughts?

Still trying to get a decent backup of my files... Windows Backup & Restore Center does not like my external hard drive, and Windows Explorer seems to freeze and crash quicker than other apps... is there a recommended way to copy off these files that is less likely to give me problems?

Thanks very much!
WAW8 (9/3/2008)
In my experience, uninstalling Norton products does not remove all traces of them. I think I am in over my head here! I have a new (1 mo) HP laptop with Vista Home Premium 64 and started experiencing the errors described here in the last 48 hours.

With the help of this thread, I uninstalled NIS, disabled Windows Defender and Sidebar, and though it is better - still having the problem. I haven't installed anything suspect - I think just AdobeCS3, Acrobat Pro 8, Quickbooks 2008, and Office 2003. And a print driver.

I am in the process now of backing up some files that I don't want to lose, then need to figure out my next step. I don't have any experience with system restores, but it sounds like restoring back to several days ago might what I need to try.

I first experienced this in Quickbooks, perhaps after installing some quickbooks updates. It seems like my initial stalls were when trying to print forms or set up printers in quickbooks. I recently accepted some Adobe CS3 updates as well. I guess I should look into removing those updates but it doesnt sound like any of you found your culprit in programs like these, so i don't want to go trashing stuff I don't have to.

I realize my post is not entirely coherent - it has been many years since I have had to get this technical in windows and I don't really know if I have the skills to pull off some of what you describe above. If I get stumped after trying to restore, where should I look for help on this - call vista support? If I am within the return timeframe, should I take this thing back to the store? If I did, wouldn't this happen again once I reinstalled all the same programs to another vista machine?

Any guidance is appreciated! To cut a long story short (like others I went off on a few dead end tangents) the culprit was the Bullguard AV system. I completely uninstalled it from Safe Mode with as good as immediate success - & that was 3 days ago, & now back at full speed.

Since then I've downloaded a clean version of the latest AV software suite (BG8.0), re-installed it and its basically working all OK. Further info (from their own forums) shows that Bullguard still have a problem (Windows defender doesn't recognise that the firewall and AV are installed - but that's a minor issue compared with a non working laptop). I supose this has to be natural - the more difficult and complicated MS make vista in order to protect it against attack the more difficult it must be for the AV products to control and manage such a system, I think I've learnt that the AV software itself is probably going to be the most likely culprit in most cases

I'd be interested to hear if other have similar experience........

RE: [SOLVED] Error message: "Login process has failed to create the security options dialog"

SALVATION!

Finally, finally I fixed it for me myself.

It was VERY tricky to find out but if HDD activity-freeze occurs, let it go for 4-5 minutes. After reboot, look at the event manager and chose "errors".

probably you will find, that all the errors diskussed here are logged BEFORE the freeze acutally happens, maybe were talking about less than one second. If you let the error "proceed" long enough (give it enogh time to log itself to event viewer), you'll find another error caused by "iastor.sys" - that is the Intel AHCI-driver for my ICH8R southbridge. This error is always the last before the freeze.

...and it is caused by you CD/DVD-ROM, most probably a Samsung / TSSTcorp model. The error seems related to the IDE/SATA bridging, these devices do. After unplugging both, my LG and TSSTcorp drive, nothing ever happened again. Putting the LG back on - no errors at all. Putting the TSST back on - freeze after 3-5 minutes of being up.

Good luck to anyone out there!!!

RE: [SOLVED] Error message: "Login process has failed to create the security options dialog"

Hi All,

I have suffered with this for months. I experienced the very same problem and it drove me crazy! You know, being at work, knowing your machine at home doesn't work properly, thinking about solutions all the time... :w00t:

My systems specs: C2D 8400, GTS8800, 4GB RAM, ASUS P5B Deluxe (Intel 965P), ICH8R Southbridge, 500 W PSU Seasonic, Vista x64.

Situation / Problems
My Problems began somewhen between 2008-05-01 and 2008-05-19. Don't know what I did, but it was no software install though. It started with games, (CS:S and Supreme Commander), causing a complete freeze. Alt+Tab / Ctrl+Shift+Del took me to a blackscreen first and after minutes (!) left me with the error message "failure - security options: Login process has failed to create the security options dialog". During all the time I had control over the mouse, it was movable, but keystrokes had absolutely no effects so I couldn't do anything about it.

Only way out was a hard reset, means: power off, power on. Soft-resetz didn't work out. Lateron, it happened more oftenly and right away from the desktop, mostly 3-5 times a day and oftenly 3-5 minutes after booting. It seemed to me to occur randomly while using different tools such as firefox, itunes, mediaplayer, outlook, word, excel...

Countermeasures taken:
What came to my mind was a defective hard drive, because the activity led was deep red all the time with no single flicker. So I changed my HDD and cloned it onto another drive - with no effect at all, same error.

I disabled -one by one-:

* the vista indexing services,
* uninstalled my "lookeen"-Tool (which is an outlook-indexing addon),
* disabled the defrag service,
* disabled the sidebar
* uninstalled Acronis TrueImage due to bootloader modifications it has made to vista and due to volume handling errors --> Disabling all Acronis Services via msconfig.exe seems to do the job, too, for some ppl (1,2)
* restored the MBR via FIXMBR C:; FIXBOOT C:; BOOTCFG /rebuild
* uninstalled NVIDIA ForceWare / Rollback to 169.x-Versions (last WHQL from 12/2007)
* NVIDA ForceWare related Tools (in my case: RivaTuner 2.09)
* uninstalled X-Fi Drivers / reinstalled new 2.18 beta drivers
* rebuilt the WMI-Repsoitory
* Uninstalled the Apple Bonjour Tool

All with absolutely no effect on the matter.

Possible culprits
Afterwards I used the windows protocols to identify the culprit. I ended up with

* BitDefender 2008 AntiVirus (bdfsfltr.sys caused errors continously)
* Java 1.6.0 Update 6 (java.exe oftenly hung itself up and smoothly changed into "our" error)
* Windows Defender (which is a crappy tool all the way from head to toes anyways)
* Comodo Firewall Pro (which caused several kernel log entries)

After reading this thread, it seems to be the AV-solution, no matter which product you're using.

Possible solutions
What I'll do next:

1) deactivate Windows defender, this sh** tool which I would love to cut out of vista and stick it into some M$ managing a**. (sorry for offensive wording )

2) I'll stress test the system and see if our error occurs again.

3) If error does NOT occur anymore, I'll reinstall the tools mentioned above one by one to see if one of them causes the failure.

See you all, m8s, hope this will be over soon...

FURTHER QUESTIONS:

1) How did you guys disable Windows Defender completely? Via services?
2) Same question as 1) about the sidebar. Are there any dependencies to other applications / services?

RESULTS
I completely disabled both, Windows Defender and the Sidebar. Afterwards I -sorry- had another freeze with "failure - security options" when I tried to drag and drop a complete HDD to a sidebar. It seems related to the Windows Explorer though. The good news: since then, nothing ever happened.

RE: [SOLVED] Error message: "Login process has failed to create the security options dialog"

I have had avast before but did not like the clunky interface. Each wants to have complete control over the filesystem, and each gets in the way of the others. To make matters worse, in recent times, the simpler AV apps have become security "suites", often including firewall, email, and real-time file scanning -- sometimes installing these by default without telling folks.

This has further been complicated by new security rules in Vista that further muddy the waters with elevations rights, different user classes, not running as Admin by default, UAC, etc.

Getting one AV "suite" to behave well is a challenge; running several at the same time is asking for trouble.

Plus .. if this is going to get into a discussion of AV products, we should move this thread to the Security forum.

RE: [SOLVED] Error message: "Login process has failed to create the security options dialog"

I recommend Avast! antivirus. I also had Superantispyware, spyware blaster, defender, spybot and winpatrol installed with the AVG 7.5., most of which I uninstalled to get AVG 8 to work.

So, is the real culprit AVG 8? Anyone have a suggestion for an Antivirus that will work with all of the above? A little box came up and said AVG 8 would not run well with other virus software installed.

I would suggest a poll that includes Threatfire, AVG 8, Defender, Win Patrol (all currently on my HP8300 desktop) and any other security software to see if one or two items come up as the culprit.

I am removing Threatfire first to see if that helps. I was at point thinking like others that it was my hard drive. But, after a week and reading posts from people like you willing to share info, my Acer is now running smoothly! You cannot uninstall Windows Defender but, I turned it off completely and also found I had a corrupted sidebar which I disabled. Hard to believe these were the culprits! Kept running in safe mode and restoring and was ready to pull my hair out!! Windows Defender had done an automatic update on 5-6-08 and thats when my trouble began. Thanks again for posting and helping resolve my probs.....:)

RE: [SOLVED] Error message: "Login process has failed to create the security options dialog"

I had same problem in spades and tried many things. checked all disks and memory and started to delete processes and programs. my cpu was running 55% with no apps running. went to minimum startup processes. finally solved the problem by uninstalling my antivirus program, which was CA Internet security suite ver 2007. Knock on wood, but i solved it by uninstalling Symantec Internet Security, as well as a bunch of other things i should not have uninstsalled, but the culprit was the Symantec. I've had so many issues with Symantec NIS over the years, i'm not sure why i continue to be dumb enough to use it. Best wishes to all with dealing with this error. I restarted my computer and then nothing was showing on the screen, even the bios. So I checked all the internal computer components and everything was running fine, I reset the bios via removing the battery and the my computer started up again. I was able to log in, (albeit 3-4 times slower) and then encountered the problems people have been facing. Every 30 seconds a program will lag, and then say (not responding) and then after a minute or so will go back to working normally. Some programs will not even open. I tried defragmenting my hd first, but after 4 hours that too froze. After it freezing and a few more restarts, I can now only start my computer up in safe mode. I tried a "sfc /scannow" in cmd and that finished and said it had found and corrected errors in system files, after that I attempted to do a system restore, but that got stuck in the initialization phase. I'm now trying to do a system restore off my vista disk, and it's being extremely slow, but hopefully it will work.

my computer is a custom build tower:
- 2gb ram
- 2.8 ghz pentium d
- nvidia 8600 gts
- vista hd - WD 250gb
- 2nd hd - 320gb Seagate
- Asus p5n-sli mobo

RE: [SOLVED] Error message: "Login process has failed to create the security options dialog"

I too have this problem, but it started after I installed Threatfire.
