I don't know why, but the cable you got off ebay may be an older PATA cable w/ lesser pins. There is usually an older 40 wire cable and the newer 80 wire one. The 80 wire one is made for use with ATAPI5/UDMA4, I suspect that the cable which worked for you probably is the 80 wire one which has the blue colored connector on one end which hooks up to the motherboard.

fixed the problem!!!!!
needed to change back to a good ide cable.
I tried getting a cheapo round one on ebay......enough said.
You get what you pay for.
The origional motherboard flat one works fine.

I opened the case again. Made sure the burner is master and the rom is the slave and connected them again correctly in the ide cables. I made sure all power and ide are snugly connected, nothing is loose.
Then I tried buring again and still got an error. here is the latest log of a test run:

Also youve probably not connected the cables properly when you upgraded, check all cables are pushed as far is as they can go. And do what stevec suggested, and connect the burner on the end of the ide cable, and set it to master. Put the other drive on the next one in on the ide cable and set it to slave. That should make it work. Also if the power connector is not in all the way it may not be getting enough power to burn discs, but enough just to read them.

I've had the best luck making the burner the Master on the cable and the dvdrom as the slave. I encountered this problem early on in my conversion to vista and my DVD burner was just too far out of date and no firmware upgrades were available. I purchased two new Samsung DVD Burners from Newegg for $30.00 each and all is well. I use Ashampoo burning Studio 7. BUT, in other machines again, I've had best luck by putting the BURNER as master and the ROM as slave, but I honestly don't know that it makes a difference.

The media inserted doesn't make a difference.
Do I need the burner to be a master or slave on the IDE cable?
I have a dvd burner and a dvdrom on the same IDE cable and I need both.
Also,
As per the last suggestions, I was unable to change any of the IDE drivers.

The two red highlighted lines are telling us there's a hardware problem, or at least a conflict with the drive and the pas through being used by the Winaspi layer.

First thoughts.......Disable the native Imapi burning service in 'services.msc' this can cause conflicts.

is there a firmware upgrade for the drive?

it will be vey slow but try burning a disk with DMA disabled.

change the media you are using, use a different make of CD\DVD.

One final suggestion, regardless of which chipset you have find the parent controller for IDE devices in control panel, select to change driver and install the standard Dual Channel PCI IDE controler, sometimes it works.

I would like to get this problem resolved firstly so I can burn again.
This burner was just working fine a few days ago on my xp-pro system.

the second problem I am having is with vista dreamscene.
It crashes after a few seconds of running and gives an error about being unable to decode.
I have just been trying to use the standard backgrounds that come with the program.

firstly, I have a problem with my burner, a pioneer 111L that worked fine in my old system.
I just finished a major upgrade as follows:
core 2 quad q6700
2gb ddr2-800 dual channel ram
gigabyte ps5-ds3r motherboard
nvidia 8800gtx msi overclocked card
running vista ultimate.

When I try to burn using the newest nero or with vista's built in buring program i get an error.
