How to fix?

Went too far too fast tweaking the startup programs via program explorer. I think blocked then deleted from startup the program or service that allows one to view thumbnails of images in the file browser (explorer). Anybody know which one that is and how to add it back to the startup list? BTW, my startup IS faster though:>)

Thanks
J

Icons for Desktop from Websites

I have been trying to assign icons to web sites that I have on my desktop. Unfortunately, the only icons I can use reflect IE in the Icon. With XP, I can drag the URL from the address line and place it on the desktop or I can right click on properties and change the icon via "Change Icon>Apply>Ok. When one does that with VISTA, the Icon will not change. Hope I have made this problem clear. Thanks for any responses.

Hibernation

If I understand hibernation correctly it is a form very deep sleep. But, what I have never figured out is the following. I had several computers over the past 8 years or so and even with the Macs, I have never had a computer that was really capable of using deep sleep or in this case hibernation. Every time I have tried it the present machine I have (HP a6300f) never ever wakes up. So I guess my question is do very many people use this feature and if so how do they get it to work?

Defragging

I need help how do I defrag my computer , I have windows vista and i havent done a defrag since i have brought it.
what steps do i take and how long does it take and where would i view results?

How to Delete a System File in Windows Vista...Access Denied when in System32

If you need to delete or overwrite a system file in Windows Vista, you'll quickly notice that you cannot delete system files, even as administrator. This is because Windows Vista's system files are owned by the TrustedInstaller service by default, and Windows File Protection will keep them from being overwritten.

Thankfully, there's a way that you can get around this. You need to take ownership of the files, and then assign yourself rights to delete or modify the file. For this, we'll use the command line.

Open an administrator command prompt by typing cmd into the start menu search box, and hit the Ctrl+Shift+Enter key combination.

To take ownership of the file, you'll need to use the takeown command. Here's an example:

takeown /f C:\Windows\System32\en-US\winload.exe.mui

That will give you ownership of the file, but you still have no rights to delete it. Now you can run the cacls command to give yourself full control rights to the file:

cacls C:\Windows\System32\en-US\winload.exe.mui /G geek:F

Note that my username is geek, so you will substitute your username there.

At this point, you should be able to delete the file. If you still can't do so, you may need to reboot into Safe Mode and try it again. For the filename in the example, I was able to overwrite it without safe mode, but your mileage may vary.

Aero ON/OFF shortcuts

http://www.vistaforums.com/Forum/Topic12378-12-1.aspx

Stop User Account Control (UAC) screen flicker / flash

http://www.vistaforums.com/Forum/Topic4921-12-1.aspx

Great tweak...speeds up UAC nicely.
