P8700 or T9400...which one, how much does it matter?

Hey guys,

The Intel P8700 is a Core 2 Duo, [b]3MB L2 cache, [i][/i][/b]1,067MHz-FSB, whereas

The T9400is a Core 2 Duo, [b][i]3MB L2 cache[/b][/i], 1,067MHz-FSB.

The only difference is the L2 cache. 3MB vs. 6MB, as far as I know. However, what's with the Pxxx vs. Txxx?? Is there any other difference based on that?

What \??\c: stands for? I can not find this files anywhere on the disk.

Incorrect file version in Windows Defender

This is my second post.

There is a bit strange things in Windows Defender, if i go to Tools->Software Explorer

i can see the file version of any running applications. It looks like some of them are inconsistent

with what i have on disk.

For example, after upgrading to Vista SP2 Windows Explorer explorer.exe in C:\Windows

directory has version 6.0.6002.xxxxx and does not have digital signature (should it have?).

At the same time Windows Defender shows that i still running old version 6.0.6000.xxxxx and

it shows that this file digitally signed.

The same thing is with IE. It was recently updated, but Defender still shows the old version

of the file.

I am a little bit puzzled.

Blue Screen Help

Hi,

I just build my first computer about a month ago. It started out running great but now I am getting progressively more frequent Blue Screens of Death. They occur seemingly random and anywhere from 5 minutes to a couple hours of turning my computer on. I am a complete noob when it comes to trouble shooting this stuff so I'm not sure whats wrong or how to fix it. The error messages I am getting are: MEMORY_MANAGEMENT and PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA. I have read that these are caused by defects with RAM so I ran the memory diagnostics tool that comes with vista and it showed no errors found. I havn't touched anything with the default settings of my hardware (no overclocking, etc).

Please help!

Windows Update problem

When I go to Control Panels > Windows Update > Turn Auto Updating On all I get is a green check mark. It doesn't seem to load. I don't know if it is related, but when I start my computer I keep getting a message that Automatic Updates are not turned on, yet my computer shuts down about once a week without warning to load new updates. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Error in VISTA - Shell32.dll

Hi,

I Installed ASTON software to my Windows Vista OS.
After instaling i asked for log off & then restarted the system.

After restarting I got only Windows logon screen.

But after providing my administrator password, its showing an error message box saying

"ordinal 123 could not be located in dynamic link library (Shell32.dll)". This msgbox having single OK button to accept.

Clicking on OK button, blackens the entire screen.

Nothing other its showing.

How to enter inside the OS....?

Vista and XP on 2 hard drives on same computer

Is there any way to have 2 hard drives hooked up to one computer with Vista on one and XP on the other. I have Vista on one hard drive and Xp on the other but I unplug one to go the the other. I have sata drives and I keep the side cover open to un hook one and hook up the other. It gets old.

Is Autorun.inf possible in Vista

I am creating an educational resource for people who are illiterate, and so cannot cope with messages from Microsoft. I can create a CD with an autorun.inf which launches an html file. This works OK in XP. In Vista the CD is ignored. The CD's will be used in stand-alone computers which will not be connected to the Internet, so it will not matter if all security is disabled.

Is it possible to set up Vista so that inserting the CD will cause the html file to be launched?

VIsual Themes revert to old theme

I downloaded a vista visual theme and I applied it patching my system etc. but when I turn off my computer and turn it back on or any other time when I turn my PC on the theme is applied but after a few seconds it reverts to the regular vista theme. Problems with HP Solution Center on HP Pavillion running VISTA Home Permium

I had HP Solution Center for an HP Scanjet 4850 installed on a PC running WINDOWS XP. I ported Solution Center over to a PC running Windows Vista using Microsoft's Windows Easy Transfer Companion. When I start HP Solution Center I get a message (every time) "Please wait while Windows configures HP Solution Center". If I cancel or not I get an error message saying that a network resource is unavailable. When I click OK Solution Center starts, gives me the same error message. When I clear all error Messages I am able to scan photos, documents etc.

I tried reinstalling the software but then I try I get an error stating that the installer cannot access the HKEY\Local_Machine\System\ENUM registry key. I have tried changing the permissions on that key but Vista will not let me save changes even though I am logged in to an administrator account.

Where do I go from here.

i right click in my computer and group by Type ... and now eveywhere has changed like this ! i go to my drives and see its changed to group mode by type ...
but in normal times it has to be different ! i hate this problem ... i could solve it by some change in registery ...
now i installed my new windows and after few days it showed up !
now i can fix it via that registery in normal Windows Explorer mode but cant correct it in "Select Menu" that shows up for selecting some files via a program or something ... actually "select menu" Problem showed up from start ...

System_Service_Exception

Hello! I built my system about a year and a half ago, and things have been running relatively smoothly, until recently. It has been taking Vista a very long time, and many attempts by me at rebooting to get going. Yesterday, I was working for at least 2 hours trying to get the thing to boot. Finally, I just turned it loose for 30 minutes and came back, thankfully, to the login screen. It had been freezing up at the loading bar every other time. It ran just fine after that.

Today, I woke up, and went ahead and started booting. It went right through the loading, and to the login. "Too easy" I thought. I was right. I logged in, and WHAM, BSOD. I've been searching on my laptop, rebooting, and booting into safe mode all morning. Thank god I have this laptop, otherwise, I'd be stuck. Here are the details I took down from the BSOD:

I noticed that in the tiny amount of time I had before the BSOD, it said that the Audio Device was not Installed, and the Audio Service is Not Running. I do have my headphones plugged in. I popped them out and plugged in my speakers, thinking *maybe* they were the problem with that, but no dice. (This is in safe and normal mode)

Recently I began having problems when I attempted to boot up my labtop that is running windows vista. I have pasted the description of the error that was provided by windows. If someone could help that would be wonderful.

picture renaming

Hi
When I go into pictures and open up a folder of pictures arrange them in an order I like for a slide show. I then select all of the pictures and right click to rename. I then type the number 0 or the letter A and click on a blank area of the screen ( I have been doing this in XP for years and it has always worked )
In Vista as soon as I click on a blank screen the pictures go into a random mess and I have to start all over again. Please can someone out there Help I have tried unchecking the auto arrange and also align to grid but it doesnt solve the problem. My computer is a HP Pavillion with amd triple core running Vist Home premium. Thanks in advance for any help.

I also checked out this page at [url=http://blogs.msdn.com/askie/archive/2009/02/20/ie-8-blocker-policy.aspx]http://blogs.msdn.com/askie/archive/2009/02/20/ie-8-blocker-policy.aspx[/url] for the step by step guide to install it. But in Vista Home Premium 32 bit, I cannot open the Group Policy Editor. When I type GPEDIT.MSC from start\Run and then hit the Enter key, the error message says soemthing like GPEDIT.MSC does not exists.

After I downloaded the Toolkit, I run the IE8BlockerToolkit.EXE and it extracted 4 files:

IE80Blocker.adm
IE80Blocker.cmd
IE80BlockerHelp.htm
IE80BlockerHelp-GPFilteringDialog.jpg

I double clicked on IE80Blocker.cmd and then I cannot proceeed to the next step to setup the IE8 Blocker Template (IE80Blocker.adm) May I ask if anyone can shed some light on this? How can I install this Toolkit to Disable Automatic Delivery of Internet Explorer 8 in Vista Home Premium 32 bit properly? Many thanks in advance, you help is much appreciated.

Unable to uninstall

Hi, Folks. Any help with this problem?

Many months ago I used Windows Defrag which removed half of my

listed programs from the PROGRAMS & FEATURES component . All of

the programs remained in Program Files list and worked O.K. Since

that Cockup I have used a 3rd party defrag and kept well clear of

the windows tool.

The problem is that I am unable to uninstall any of the delisted progs

using Windows or a 3rd party uninstaller and I need to get rid of a few

end of life or corrupt progs such as WMP11 and reinstall/update. I would

prefer this route rather than install on top of the originals which has caused

all kinds of problems.

So, the big question is - how can I force uninstall these programs ?

Can you suggest a download to do the job ? I can't find any answers at

Microsoft.

:angry: :angry: Alright, so I am in deep trouble. All of the folders on my user account are gone and Vista reverted everything like my account was just created. I lost all of my files and everything else I have had. Its all been deleted!!!!!

It started this morning when I logged in and everything off of my desktop was gone. All of the files and everything. I don't know what happened, I didn't delete the account or make a new one or anything.

All I know is that my brother, the idiot was stupidly going through my files from his user account (through Computer/Users), since he was stupidly made an admin, and he was deleting some files off of my user account. I'm not sure what it was but it must have been something he deleted that messed up everything! I still see some of the items in my garbage can of stuff that might have been deleted by the dumb sh!t. The other user accounts are fine, its just mine that is missing everything and acting like its a brand new account. :angry: I don't know what he deleted but I know he didn't do a complete wipeout of my account. I still have a feeling that my files are somewhere because the hard drive is still the same size.

I need help and a way to bring my files back. I know that they should still be on the hard drive because the hard drive itself is huge and its still the same size as it was and there are some files in my recycle bin, so I am hoping that there is some way to fix this or I am going to be pissed when I see him :angry: . All of my work and school files were on this user name and he just had to go poking his dumb face through it. Please help me with this, this is a life and death situation, more for me than it is for him. If I cant get any of my files back I dont know what I'll do. Please help me with this.

Well. as ive posted before. i think i got my wireless connection going. but now i need to buy something to play my 360 and ps2. and somthing that inexpensive and thats not going to cost me extra money on my dsl bill. just somthing to put in my room to hook my games system up to.

Some USB-connected devices don't show up as drives

I have Vista Home Premium SP1.

When I connect some devices like an iPhone or a Digital Camera, it doesn't show up as a drive in Explorer.

When I open Device Management, the errant device appears under "Portable Devices", with an error icon, and shows the following message in its properties:

"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"

Other devices like an external hard disk don't show any errors and also show up as drive letters.

Can anyone help?

I just setup a new system and got vista ultimate 64 up and running. Havent experienced any issues at all until i downloaded itunes. The program installs fine, however i have graphics and display issues with Itunes once it launches.,. I've uninstalled Itunes8 and reinstalled 7.7 (both 64bit), and that didnt work either...

Anyone experience this particular issue? Howd you fix it?

K so im basically your average guy with computers trying to finish a school project. My problem is that im trying to burn my video project ive created on windows movie maker, onto a recordable DVD+R disc . BUT when i click publish movie, and then choose recordable CD then click next. It brings me to this

[i] There is no disc in the CD burner. Insert a CD, and then try again.

Insert a recordable CD into drive E:\[/i]

Ive also gotten things llike [i]No DVD recorder detected![/i], so my project is due tomorrow now since I couldn't get it today. I am using blanks discs that are Staples brand, and i dont know if the discs im using could be the problem. there brand new. Any help would be very much appreciated!!!!!

Media player trouble

Strangest thing started occuring today. Everytime I move my mouse Windows media player 11 starts. I click the x to close it and as soon as I move the mouse it restarts or comes back to the top! Any ideas on how to fix this? I tried going back to a restore point from yesterday, didn't help. The only thing I may have done to cause this is I downloaded a screensaver from the National street rod assocaition web site. I tried to uninstall it but can't find it anywhere.

this will sound pretty basic I know but the keyboard on my laptop has locked and I can't for the life of me recall how to unlock it agani - keypad is working, everything else seems fine.

I seem to recall I had the problem before which a call to PC World resolved but I cannot stand to be on the phone ofr half an hour before getting someone...any help would be much apprecaited.

Hi everyone,

I have been doing some research and it looks like my laptop had a 64 bit chip (its an intel core 2 duo T5750). Can anyone confirm if this is actually a 64 bit chip?

Also, if it is, I was wondering what my reinstall options are... Will i need to reinstall all of my software or can I preserve it in some way? I only ask this because I thought ahead when i installed my current version of vista and partitioned my drives in an unusual way, as follows:

I have to local hard disks, each 160gb, which i will refer to as disk A and disk B wen referring to the physical disks. I have the disk A split into two partitions (named C: and E C: is 30 gigs and E: is 120 gigs. The second disk is only one partition and is called Z:

I installed Vista to C: (30 gigs) and all of my software is on E: I use Z: for an archive of static data like pictures and music etc.

Z: will be easy to backup and restore if i upgrade but Disk A (C: and E are another story...

Is there any way to back up the software installed on E: ?? or even better, can i install Vista 64 on C: while leaving E: alone? It seems like it would not work so well since the registry will be erased?

vista ultimate and internet security programmes

anyone have any idea why i cant run the most recent programmes for internet security on my vista ultimate?
i can run the old one, this has only 6 days left.

i have downloaded trend micro and kaspersky free trials and neither will work, yet the old TM one does, which is 2008 version.

each time i have installed them they have cut the internet connection after bout a minute or so. i can niether update nor open a webpage untill i close them down and renew and repair connections.
i have no other av or firewall programme runing and vista is a clean and fresh install. updates in up to date too.

Transfering from XP hard drive to vista Hard drive

The old XP machine fried the mother board but the hard drive survived. So I am trying to transfer files from the old hd to the new hd using the file transfer wizard. The old hd is connected using an external shell via USB. Upon the first attempt it copied everything on to it self. What I do wrong?

So when i boot up my computer and log in. There is a popup saying

"error loading C:\Windows\system32\ddcDvtuv.dll

The Specified module could not be found"

and i am wondering if anyone can give me that file if they have it. Or if there is another way to fix it.

i haven't noticed it affecting any other files on my computer but it is very annoying to have that thing pop up everytime i boot up the computer and log back in.
