I didn't think it worked like a firewall. Here is how to open the HOSTS file: http://simpable.com/software/how-to-update-the-vista-host-file/. Ignore the lines starting with # but check that there are no other lines than 127.0.0.1 localhost at the bottom. Report if you see other such lines.

RE: [SOLVED]Some websites don't work

Have you tried uninstalling Norton? Windows wouldn't cause such a problem, you would either get internet or no internet....not just some internet. Last resort it could be a DNS issue but doubtful. Try running the cmd prompt and typing "tracert google.com" (without quotes, and replace google.com with the name of the site you cannot connect to. Let us know what results you get: Does it complete or does it timeout?

RE: [SOLVED]Some websites don't work

Since some Norton products implement a firewall of sorts, it could mean that Norton is blocking the websites, not IE.

Did you see the pinned post about Uninstalling Norton products?

RE: [SOLVED]Some websites don't work

Yes, the sites work on my other computer.

I tried all the things in that post and discovered that I can go to the web pages through a proxy. Nothing else worked though. It didn't give a solution if that worked. Does that mean i have a virus? I have norton, and it has run since this problem started.

RE: [SOLVED]Some websites don't work

Check out the pinned post about being unable to browse some websites in Vista.

RE: [SOLVED]Some websites don't work

Do they work on other computers inside your network?

[SOLVED]Some websites don't work

For some reason some sites just stopped working on my laptop. They used to work and still do on my other computer. My internet connection is fine. Other sites and IM work great. It's probably about 1/4 of all websites. Some particular ones that don't work are mail.com and ign.com. These sites don't work on both firefox and IE. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated.
