All is not completely well. Since I did this, and only since then (when I changed the interface name to the name of the workgroup, which I now think has only been useful by reinitializing some of its untold and automatic configuration - while I had no reason to think that the name needs to be the same as the workgroup) I could not open my Outlook file sitting on a remote network share (Vista 32 bit business edition in this case).
With the help of WireShark, I discovered that the connection seemed to be initiated in IPV6. So I disabled IPV6 on both computers and it worked anew.

Needless to say, we are still guinea pigs to Microsoft for these products. Sad to see that it's with such a low level part of the OS that they (we) are having such troubles...

RE: [SOLVED]Media Connect Issue

I had to find a solution...

I changed the network name from the default name (Network) to the same name I had given my workgroup (keeping it as a private network) and, suddenly, by double-clicking on my XBOX360 icon in the network view, the media sharing dialog box came up with the "Find media that others are sharing" box checked and the "Share my media" unchecked but not greyed out anymore.

I hope this helps for you all.

If anyone can clarify what differentiates the workgroup (or domain) name from the network name seen in the "Network and Sharing Center", I would love to read you.

Regards.

RE: [SOLVED]Media Connect Issue

I have just upgraded (clean install) from a Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bits to a 64 bits (with SP1) and although file sharing works well, and the network adapter is clearly working fine to browse the Web, transfer files from the Internet and the local (private) network, I get the same "sharing is disabled because a network connection was not found" message and can't even try to turn it on.

Would anyone know on what erronous basis this statement bases it's conclusion, because, obviously, the network connection was found for any other service on this same computer to access the network.

Thanks for following up on this.

RE: [SOLVED]Media Connect Issue

I am actually having nearly the same issue on a 680i chipset though I am using x64 as well. Though my media sharing worked fine when all of my connections were wired, now only my pc is wired and sharing doesnt detect my network but everything else lists it as available (same exact issues as you). It is important to note that 3rd party software such as orb has no problem what so ever sharing my media.

Any help would be greatly appreciated on the issue.

RE: [SOLVED]Media Connect Issue

I actually tried that after I posted. I deleted all network adapters, including the driver files. Downloaded the new drivers, and then reinstalled. Same issue.

Oh yeah, and I did forget to mention, i am runing x64, not x32. I am almost thoroughly convinced that is the issue, but I really have no idea, to tell the truth.

RE: [SOLVED]Media Connect Issue

There are some problems with netwoking with Vista and other devices there's no point denying it, but rather than go through a list of things to try at that stage in the proceedings I would be very likely to delete all network devices and making sure all the devices are plugged in and 'on' run the network setup wizard and start again from scratch, hopefully the mistake the network configurator made last time wont be repeated.

I admit I don't have the knowledge of networking that others around here have so that's what I have done in the past and solved various problems on home networks, if you make a restore point before you do it and it doesn't work you can always return the sytem to where it was.

RE: [SOLVED]Media Connect Issue

Oh, and just as a heads up, it works just fine on my brother's computer. it's XP2 with WMP11, and it works great. doesn't read most of the movie formats, but that's a different story.

[SOLVED]Media Connect Issue

Ok, so I encountered this problem trying to connect my Xbox 360 as a media center extender. I was in Media Center trying to find the extender, and it found it, but kept coming back with errors about it not being able to configure it. I go to my network button, and boom, there it is, along with all my other computers. I click on "Open Media Sharing," and it won't let me, says "Media sharing is currently disabled, either because the sharing service is not running or your firewall settings have changed. To restart sharing, you must first comfirm your sharing settings."

So I click OK.

Pops me into the Media Sharing window. I check the boxes labeled "Find Media that others are Sharing" and "Share my media"

I click settings and configure what I want it to share.

There's an "i" however, saying that "Sharing is disabled because a network connection was not found. Check your network connection settings."

I click the "Network..." button next to it.

Says I'm on a network. NetworkDiscovery is on. File Sharing is on. Public folder Sharing is on. Printer Sharing is off, because I don't have one. Password Protected Sharing is on. Media Sharing is on. I'm on a Private network. It says I have both local and Internet access on my Local Area Connection. My Firewall is on. I checked to make sure it's allowing the media extender and media sharing applications, it was.

I close the box, and it still says I have no network found. I continue anyway. UAC prompts me to continue, I do. It asks me what devices It'd like me to share my media to. I make sure all of them are allowed, of which the Xbox is one of them. It's still offering me the fact that I don't have a network connection, even though, again, I verify all the information above.

Click OK, and it now populates my PC into the network box. I clicked "open media sharing" on it, and it pops back up thatMedia Sharing isdisabled. I've followed this loopseveral times now. Changing my network from private to public and back. disabling and renabling firewalls, both at the same time. Turning off and on different features like UAC, file sharing, passwords, etc. all to no avail.

What Am I missing?

Hardware:MSI P6NSli-Fi (nForce650i) Core 2 Duo E6400, X1800XT, 2GB RAM, Creative X-Fi. Network: Belkin Wireless 54g Router (UPnP enabled, Firewall Disabled) Gateway Gigabit Switch (My desktop ison theswitch, which is a subnet of therouter. The Xbox is in the router directly), and use an Actiontec DSL modem.
